United States to renegotiate South Korea trade pact

Vice President Pence, visiting Japan on his 10-day tour of Asia, said the US has launched bilateral talks with Tokyo in the hopes of reaching a new trade agreement.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is on board an American aircraft carrier stationed in Japan amid heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula. As the brown bomber jacket-clad vice president was briefed near the military demarcation line, two North Korean soldiers watched from a short distance away, one taking multiple photographs of the American visitor.

Pence said the North represents the most risky and most immediate threat in the Asia-Pacific and President Donald Trump is determined to confront that threat by marshaling unprecedented cooperation with allies in the region, China and the world. But Pence expressed impatience with the unwillingness of the regime to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. "Under President Donald Trump, over-regulations' days are over and there's a new era of jobs, growth and prosperity in the United States of America", he said.

Townsend said it's important to remember China's strategic interests.

Last week his administration kept Japan on a Treasury Department watch list covering foreign exchange policies of USA trading partners, exerting tacit pressure on Tokyo to buy more American-made goods and services. He also described the bond between the USA and South Korea as "unshakeable" during an address on Monday. “They have to make a final decision about getting rid of illegal programs in order to turn the page and have a more normal relationship with the worldwide community.”.

Mr Pence said: "We will not rest and will not relent until we obtain the objective of a denuclearised Korean Peninsula".

Pence then urged South Korea to "level that playing field" by reevaluating the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA).

Pence's trip to Korea comes amid increasing tensions between the U.S. and North Korea, with Pyongyang's ambassador to the United Nations the latest to weigh in.

During a fellowship meal after the services, he said the tensions on the Korean peninsula had put into sharp focus the importance of the joint U.S.

The official said Tuesday that Japan still hopes to bring the US back into a multilateral framework such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump would not be “drawing red lines in the sand” with North Korea. "President Trump is playing a very risky game indeed".
