In addition to the state grants within the 21st Century Cures Act, committee investigations also led to legislative solutions that ultimately were included in the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA).

HHS Secretary Tom Price announced that grants will be awarded to all 50 states and total $485 million. Several of Donnelly's provisions were signed into law, and he successfully advocated and continues to advocate for funding that would expand prevention and treatment programs. The funding was provided by the 21 Century Cures Act, which passed the Senate with Sen. The priorities the secretary outlined are welcomed and needed.

A state Human Services Department spokesman said in an email that the money will go to supplement the state's existing opioid programs, to increase access to treatment, and to pay for addiction prevention and education programs, among other things.

He has said that at least some of the housing measures will be included in the Ontario budget, set to be tabled April 27. It will also introduce a C$125 million ($93 million) five-year program to encourage apartment construction.

Today, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly announced IN will receive a federal grant for approximately $10.9 million to help combat the opioid epidemic.

"It's much cheaper to prevent a problem before it begins than clean up the mess after the problem has already occurred", said Karen Pershing, director of Knoxville's Metro Drug Coalition, who is in Atlanta for the summit.

"Families across Texas have had their lives destroyed by opioid addiction, an epidemic that millions in our country continue to grapple with".
