USA, Mexico & Canada Announce Joint Bid for 2026 World Cup

The United States has officially announced its bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup, partnering with Canada and Mexico in a joint effort to bring the planet's largest sporting event to North America for the first time since it was held in the U.S.in 1994.

Another U.S. president will be in the White House in 2026, but Infantino felt compelled to reiterate the requirements for any country looking to host FIFA's showcase event, which will be expanded from 32 to 48 teams after the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Sunil Gulati, left, President of the United States Soccer Federation, Decio de Maria, center, President of the Mexican Football Federation, and Victor Montagliani, President of the Canadian Soccer Association, hold a news conference, Monday, April 10, 2017, in NY.

Three CONCACAF nations: the United States of America, Canada and Mexico are scheduled to made what they billed as a historic announcement today at One World Observatory on the 102 floor of One World Trade Center (the "Freedom Tower").

If their bid finally becomes successful, it would just be the second time the tournament has multiple hosts after the 2002 World Cup which was co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The proposal requests that the region be given the chance soon to prepare a report that shows the specifics of the bid to meet FIFA's requirement with the hope of the bid being awarded then, possibly by the end of the year. Right now, there's only one natural-grass stadium in Canada equipped to host a group-stage game at a World Cup: BMO Field in Toronto. The wonder is which cities in Canada will host some of the games, will we have a World Cup game in Quebec?

According to Press Association analysis, the United States probably has the facilities to host a tournament by itself tomorrow. According to Sports Illustrated, the USA joined with its neighbors due to FIFA's concerns that President Trump's immigration restrictions could create problems for traveling players and fans. The president has also backed a joint Argentina-Uruguay bid for the 2030 World Cup, which would be the tournament's 100th anniversary. If the bid was successful - and providing Federation Internationale de Football Association decides to keep the current system - it would mean three of CONCACAF's qualification slots would be sewn up by the hosts. Canada has never hosted the Federation Internationale de Football Association men's World Cup, but in 2015 they have hosted Women's World Cup.

US Soccer President Sunil Gulati was asked about the impact of Trump's policy toward Mexicans on relations between the countries as he presented the bid alongside his counterparts from Mexico and Canada in NY. He is especially pleased that Mexico is part of this bid.

Submitting a joint bid was one way U.S. Soccer could show FIFA's 209 voting members around the world that it wasn't as isolationist as its current domestic political climate indicates. They were artificial turf for Women's World Cup 2015 in Canada, a controversial choice considering the women playing in that tournament thought they were being unfairly treated compared to the men's World Cup (which has never taken place on fake grass).

"We have very specifically addressed this with the president", Gulati said of the Trump controversies.

As the 2018 and 2022 World Cup were allotted to Russian Federation and Qatar, no Asian and European countries were allowed to bid.

The United States also burnished its credentials as a major tournament host with last year's 16-team Copa America Centenario, which culminated in Chile's victory over Argentina in front of 82,026 fans at the final in NY.

The World Cup was last held in the region at United States of America 94, while Mexico hosted in 1970 and 1986.
