White House Misled Public About Defensive Measures Against North Korea

Vinson carrier group expected off Korea in late April

As worries deepened last week about whether North Korea would conduct a missile test, the White House declared that ordering a U.S. aircraft carrier into the Sea of Japan would send a powerful deterrent signal and give President Donald Trump more options in responding to the North's provocative behaviour. White House officials said on Tuesday they were relying on guidance from the Defense Department.

The deployment has angered North Korea, which has called the move an effort to increase tensions in the region.

That must have kept the loony North Koreans off balance.

The White House announcement about the nuclear-armed strike force sparked fears across East Asia about a looming catastrophe - as rising tensions between the North and the USA dominated the news.

Many feared the move signaled a preemptive strike, which President Trump had refused to rule out.

Ahmadinejad submits name for Iran presidential election
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has submitted his name for candidacy in this year's presidential election. But disappointment with the 68-year-old's administration is palpable on the streets of Iran.

The saga of the wayward carrier might never have come to light, had the Navy not posted a photograph on Monday of the Carl Vinson sailing through the Sunda Strait, which separates the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra.

"The forward deployment is deterrence, presence". During an appearance in Japan on Wednesday, Vice President Pence said that "all options are on the table" and that the U.S.is not looking to negotiate with the hermit kingdom.

"But I think when you see a carrier group steaming into an area like that, the forward presence of that is clearly, through nearly every instance, a huge deterrence". How does the commander in chief not know that an aircraft carrier is not heading to deter North Korea? If China decides to help, that would be great.

Haley's comments come amid escalating tensions between the US and North Korea. "We're trying to make it very clear to people in this part of the world that we are going to achieve the end of a denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, one way or the other". The White House declined to comment on the misunderstanding, referring all questions to the Pentagon.

"Sean discussed it once when asked, and it was all about process", a spokesman, Michael Short, told the paper about the botched timetable. The Reagan is evidently undergoing maintenance at a base near Tokyo, and the Nimitz is floating around Southern California - a far cry from showing up to face down Pyongyang's saber-rattling in the Sea of Japan or the Yellow Sea.
