Wits students protest over accommodation

A protest over accommodation at Wits University's Yale Residence

She explained that a number of students had been moved there for safety reasons and while the old residence was safe the University couldn't guarantee the students safety at that residence and as a result moved them to Yale Village.

About 100 students from the University of the Witwatersrand are protesting at the institution's Empire Road entrance over residence related issues, the university said. According to Wits Vuvuzela, fees at Yale Village range from R39 468 to R52 026.

"When we moved in January‚ they promised us heaven - that when we get to Yale Village residence‚ we were going to find services [but we did not]".

The students say they are protesting against the lack of cleaning services and WiFi at the residence, and the lack of transport services to campus.

Among their complaints is the lack of WiFi access, study areas, cleaning services, a computer lab and student bus services.

He says the students' frustration is understandable. "If students feel they can make it onto campus at that time‚ they should make use of those bus services", Patel said.

"The academic program continues as usual".

- Nonhlanhla Mbonane (@Mbonane4) April 20, 2017@thedailyvox 2. Vehicles within the university were diverted by police onto Yale Road towards to the Jorissen Street exit.

Private security has been deployed to the university, as well as Wits's campus control.

Students handed over a memorandum of demands to chief operating officer Fani Sibanyoni and said the university had until the end of the day to respond to their demands.

They also claim that university management has threatened to evict students who have not received their National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) payouts and paid for accommodation as yet.

Patel said the dean of students would collect a memorandum from the group of students. They eventually handed over their memorandum to Sibanyoni.

She warns that the accommodation issue is not something that can be addressed at this stage. Issues are being addressed by the Dean of Students, and other senior managers at Wits.
