BC election exposed a polarized province

Christy Clark, who has been asked by B.C.'s Lieutenant-Governor to continue as premier, hinted Wednesday that she would be willing to work more collaboratively with the other parties.

Tuesday's election delivered 43 seats to the Liberals, 41 to the New Democrats and three to the Green Party, exposing a deep political divide in the province that is both ideological and geographical.

On the West Shore, the NDP showed their support remains strong, with party leader John Horgan racing to a huge victory over challengers Cathy Noel of the Liberals and Brendan Ralfs of the Greens - that despite spending very little time personally campaigning in his Langford-Juan de Fuca riding.

While Horgan said it's clear British Columbians want change after 16 years under the Liberals, Clark said she reads the result as a plea to the parties to work together.

Weaver said he would negotiate with both leaders in the coming weeks and would work with whichever party has the most in common with the Green platform.

Many swing ridings were won with small margins, so the final seat count could shift after absentee ballots are tallied and judicial recounts are conducted. A recount is ensured in the riding of Courtney-Comox on Vancouver Island because the NDP is hanging on by only nine votes.

"But in eight other ridings, the increase in the Green vote share came disproportionately from the Liberals share and allowed the NDP to win when they arguably wouldn't have otherwise".

George Hoberg, professor of environmental and natural resource policy at the University of British Columbia, said the situation could create uncertainties and makes building the project politically hard.

Putin says intimidation of North Korea must end
They also acknowledged the importance of the role China is playing in its dealings with its North Korean ally. North Korea launched a new IRBM, known as Pukguksong-2 in North Korea, from the same site on February 12.

Also out are Liberal cabinet ministers Suzanne Anton and Amrik Virk.

Horgan said B.C. voters sent a signal they want to take big money out of politics, take action on climate change and move towards proportional representation.

At a separate press conference, Horgan said the two men also believe the Liberals have failed on child care, and the housing crisis. The Liberals only need one more seat for a majority.

"I think that they will be able to make a coalition", Stevenson told the Georgia Straight at the Vancouver Convention Centre, where New Democrats gathered on election night.

The votes are in, and Christy Clark will remain premier for the time being.

"We don't have experience in Canada with the Greens holding the balance of power, so we just don't know what will happen", said Nelson Wiseman, political science professor at the University of Toronto.

The Canadian government in November approved Kinder Morgan's proposal to expand Trans Mountain, which would help ensure oil exports from the oil sands in the neighbouring province of Alberta reach Asia.

A return of the BC Liberals tonight under Clark would largely maintain course, amid some promises to reduce MSP premiums and cap tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges. Even after it was corrected, the claim raced through social media for days, fuelled by the fury of NDP supporters at the thought of the Greens propping up Clark.
