Country in Trouble- the Ransomware Attack to Become Worse!

The top five cities impacted by the ransomware attack are Kolkata followed by Delhi Bhubaneswar Pune and Mumbai says Quick Heal

Microsoft Corporation has blamed the National Security Agency (NSA) for the recent ransomware cyber attack that has affected over 200,000 computers in 150 countries.

Security experts said his move bought precious time for organizations seeking to block the attacks. The exploit was leaked last month as part of a trove of NSA spy tools.

Mathews, however, said the ransomware attack "should be seen as a watershed moment" and the government must invest more in cybersecurity preparedness, especially "as India moves towards strengthening its digital economy where the volume of online transactions will see a quantum leap".

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that takes over a computer and locks the user out, preventing them from accessing any files until they pay money.

It has today released a security patch for these versions, whose support ended around three odd years ago, to prevent further damage from the massively damaging WannaCrypt ransomware. He compared the WikiLeaks release of NSA hack tools to a theft of weapons from the USA military.

On Saturday, 102 computer systems of the Andhra Pradesh police were hacked and a Nissan Renault plant production was halted because of the malware.

In a statement Saturday, Europol's European Cybercrime Centre, known as EC3, said the attack "is at an unprecedented level and will require a complex global investigation to identify the culprits".

The UK-based cyber specialist, known only as MalwareTech, registered a domain name that unexpectedly stopped the spread of the virus.

But the attackers may yet tweak the code and restart the cycle. They just happen to hit the motherlode.

It's not just your computer that you need to be anxious about. Otherwise they're literally fighting the problems of the present with tools from the past. "As a result, hospitals, businesses, governments, and computers at homes were affected". "Things could likely emerge on Monday" as staff return to work.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in a statement late Friday, encouraged people to update their operating systems. A number of hospitals in the United Kingdom, telephone systems in Spain and Italy have been hard hit.

Cyber attack 'wake-up call for governments — Microsoft chief
Russian Federation and Ukraine had a heavy concentration of infections, according to Dutch security company Avast Software BV. A new version of the ransomware may have also been spreading over the weekend. "But, we've never seen anything like this".

But he also placed fault in national governments.

"We don't expect this to be a sophisticated group", said Wellsmore.

Portugal Telecom and Telefonica Argentina both said they were also targeted.

According to the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY), it has activated the mechanism by instructing CERT-IN (Computer Emergency Response Team) to gather "all the information of the reported ransomware".

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, at a meeting of world leaders in Italy, said the attack was a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity. As a post on TechNet points out: "The exploit code used by WannaCrypt was created to work only against unpatched Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (or earlier OS) systems, so Windows 10 PCs are not affected by this attack". It had issued a patch on March 14 to protect them from Eternal Blue. Also over 60% of the 2.25 lakh ATMs in the country run on the outdated Windows XP.

Victims have paid about US$30,000 in ransom so far, with the total expected to rise substantially next week, Tom Robinson, chief operating officer and co-founder of Elliptic Enterprises, a ransomware consultant that works with banks and companies, told Bloomberg. A techie at Telefónica confirmed that the initial infection vector was a phishing email.

On Wednesday, hackers disrupted the websites of several French media companies and aerospace giant Airbus.

But those attacks - blamed on Russian Federation, which has repeatedly denied them - followed a different modus operandi involving penetrating the accounts of individuals and political organizations and then releasing hacked material online.

Infected computers appear to largely be out-of-date devices that organizations deemed not worth the price of upgrading or, in some cases, machines involved in manufacturing or hospital functions that proved too hard to patch without possibly disrupting crucial operations, security experts said.

"The NCSC has been working in collaboration with a number of organisations in the cyber security community, including MalwareTech and 2SEC4, to understand and mitigate the current Wannacry ransomware threat".
