UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting after North Korea launches missile

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for supporting Jordan’s leadership as custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem

US stock indexes are trading steady-to-better during the pre-market session, but this may be the calm before the storm as investors assess the possible impact of Friday's global cyber-attack, this week-end's ballistic missile test by North Korea and the political fallout last week from President Trump's abrupt firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

The North says it needs atomic weapons to defend itself against the threat of invasion and is widely believed to be making progress in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States - something President Donald Trump has vowed "won't happen".

The latest projectile, launched from a military base in Kusong near the country's northwest coast landed in the Sea of Japan.

It said on Monday it had successfully tested a newly developed mid-to-long range missile on Sunday aimed at verifying the capability to carry a "large scale heavy nuclear warhead".

The launches were the latest in a series of test-firings that violate United Nations resolutions barring Pyongyang from developing missile technology.

The launch Sunday is an immediate challenge to South Korea's new leader, a liberal elected just five days earlier who expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea.

"We do not know the extent of damage or information that was captured in the attack; it's likely we'll hear more details about it today but initial reports suggest it was caught relatively early and limited to older computers", said James Woods, global investment analyst at Rivkin.

Sunday's launch was of a "newly-developed mid/long-range strategic ballistic rocket, Hwasong-12", the official KCNA news agency said, adding that leader Kim Jong-Un "personally oversaw the test-launch of the new type of rocket".

Kurt Busch: Kyle Busch finishes 5th at Kansas
Truex dove to the bottom and roared from the rest of the field, ensuring there would be no more misfortune for him at Kansas. After winning the pole Friday in a track-record time, Power surrendered the lead only twice Saturday - both after pit stops.

It wasn't immediately clear what type of ballistic missile was launched, the seventh such firing this year, although the U.S. Pacific Command said that "the flight is not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile".

The North "has been a flagrant menace for far too long", it added in a statement. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters Sunday that the launch is "absolutely unacceptable" and that Japan will respond resolutely.

The statement said Washington maintains its "ironclad commitment" to stand with its allies in the face of the serious threat posed by North Korea.

KCNA said Sunday's test was meant to examine the "technical details and characteristics" of a new type of rocket "capable of carrying a powerful and big nuclear warhead", and also confirmed "the reliability of the newly-developed rocket engine". Japan's Kyodo News agency, citing unidentified sources, said the missile may be capable of reaching 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) at a normal trajectory.

The launch also comes as troops from the U.S., Japan and two European nations gather on remote U.S. islands in the Pacific for drills that are partly a message to North Korea.

Moon, South Korea's first liberal leader in almost a decade, said as he took his oath of office last week that he'd be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right. The USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft supercarrier, is also engaging with South Korean navy ships in waters off the Korean Peninsula, according to Seoul's Defense Ministry.

On Saturday, a top North Korean diplomat in charge of USA relations, Choe Son Hui, told reporters in Beijing that Pyongyang would be willing to meet with the Trump administration for negotiations "if the conditions are set".

"You first have to get into Kim Jong Un's head - which is, he's in a state of paranoia, he's incredibly concerned about anything and everything around him", Haley told ABC's "This Week" program, referring to North Korea's leader. She did not elaborate.
