Doors always open for India to join Belt and Road: China

The main goal of this initiative is to encompass pipelines and a port in Pakistan, bridges in Bangladesh and railways to Russian Federation to ultimately create what China calls a "modern Silk Road".

The two-day Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation to be started on Sunday will include opening ceremony, leaders roundtable and high-level meetings, according to the information released by a press conference co-held by National Development and Reform Commission and other departments.

"The growth is faster than the global average", said the official at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office, hailing the prominent progress scored by China and en-route countries in terms of trade and economic cooperation.

Representing the British government, the Chancellor Philip Hammond spoke on Sunday saying that the United Kingdom is a natural partner for China's new Silk Road project to seek more trade with the world as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, through the Brexit process.

In her rebuttal, Ms. Hua highlighted the wide representation by the "international community", which included top leaders of 29 countries, as a marker for the legitimacy of the two-day forum.

India and China will continue to have many divergences and the onus for managing this will lie with New Delhi if it continues to view itself as a big and emerging politico-economic power vis-a-viz Beijing, claims an editorial in the state-run Global Times.

Many countries walked away from the forum with numerous deals sealed. The biggest was for a US$3.46 billion project to set up a futuristic robotic hub in Johor.

"Our ambition is for more trade not less trade, and China clearly shares this ambition".

They noted the challenges faced by the world economy and welcomed the initiative to improve connectivity between Asia and Europe.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Government of the People's Republic of China have announced that they will step up their collaboration to strengthen the trade capacities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) along the new Silk Road.

The communique also urged countries that have signed on to the Paris climate change agreement to implement it fully.

The spokesperson said that China has always welcomed India's participation in the OBOR initiative.

Germany asked for more transparency.

In India, along with concerns over its sovereignty regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), it is also seen as a continuation of Chinese strategy of "strings of pearls" which China uses to flex its muscle in India's neighbourhood. The two South Asian neighbours have fought two wars over the disputed Kashmir region.
