Europol warns global cyberattack could escalate

Ransomware

A report in The Guardian yesterday said the attack had hit systems in 99 countries.

Microsoft distributed a patch that could have forestalled much of the attack, but in many organizations it was likely lost among the blizzard of updates and patches that large corporate and government IT departments strain to manage.

His move may have saved governments and companies millions of dollars and slowed the outbreak before US-based computers were more widely infected. Additionally, experts warn that copycats could also try another attack.

There are several factors in play.

WannaCry takes advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. "Typically, they (banks) have to report (any disruption) to both RBI and us", Bahl added.

Wainwright has acknowledged that Europol is actively collaborating with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and other worldwide law enforcement agencies as they attempt to track down the persons or groups responsible for the attack.

Installing the patch is one way to secure computers against the virus.

For example, if one of your coworkers opens an infected PDF attached to an email, soon everyone in your office could be under attack.

Ransomwar, which demands payment after launching a cyber attack, is a rising trend among hackers. Previous attacks targeted one machine at time.

The virus exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows software first identified by the US National Security Agency, experts have said.

Businesses, government agencies and other organizations were urged to quickly implement a patch released by Microsoft Corp. Even if victims do pay, there is no guarantee that all files will be returned to them intact.

'It might be that they're just being very quiet because they don't want to instil a lack of trust in their system, ' she said. If it connects to the domain, though, "the malware exits" and the system is not compromised. Brad Smith, who is Microsoft's chief legal officer, said Sunday in a blog post that his company, its customers and the government all share the blame.
