South Korean media: New president will visit US next month

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, right, talks with Matt Pottinger, Special Assistant to U.S. President Donald Trump and National Security Council (NSC) Senior Director for East Asia, during a meeting at the presidential Blue House in Seoul, South Korea, Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

South Korea and the U.S. on Tuesday agreed to work towards the "complete" denuclearisation of North Korea, also vowing to seek new and practical ways to rid Pyongyang of its nuclear weapons, Seoul officials said. Kim Jong Un's regime fired yet another ballistic missile on a very steep trajectory - perhaps demonstrating a capability to conduct an electromagnetic pulse attack that could devastate the South with a single nuclear detonation outside the atmosphere.

Also Tuesday, Adm. Harry Harris Jr., the top American military officer in the Pacific, met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo to discuss the North Korean missile launch. They might be hiding out in countries that wouldn't be willing to extradite suspects for prosecution, said Robert Cattanach, a former U.S. Justice Department attorney and an expert on cybersecurity.

"We are talking about a possibility, not that this was done by North Korea", Choi said.

The envoys also reaffirmed their "common ground" on North Korea's nuclear and missile program, Yoon noted.

Yoon said the sides have agreed to hold the summit in Washington in late June. "We will prepare the summit meeting so it could serve as an opportunity for both leaders to develop their personal bond and friendship".

While most of the attention in South Korea has been on the onerous challenges facing the country's new leader Moon Jae-in, many are paying more attention to the government's "handsome squad" of good-looking public officials that includes the president himself. He has shown a willingness to challenge the United States, saying that Seoul should reconsider its deployment of an advanced US missile defense system to better cope with North Korean threats.

Meanwhile, the South Korean Navy revealed a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier group was to remain in the vicinity indefinitely, while Seoul's defense ministry warned it was ready to carry out a preemptive strike if it detected a missile threat from North Korea.

Moon took office after his predecessor, Park Geun Hye, was removed from power due to a corruption and abuse-of-power scandal.
