Trump tweets that he shared 'facts pertaining to terrorism' with Russian officials

President Donald Trump's national security adviser says Trump didn't know where information that he shared with Russian officials came from.

At no time, at no time, where intelligence sources or methods discussed.

In his tweet Trump wrote that he was motivated by "humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russian Federation to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism".

The Washington Post's report on Monday claimed that the revelation made by Mr. Trump during his meeting with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov put a source of intelligence on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) at risk.

The revelations - which Trump appeared to verify in a pair of tweets Tuesday morning - are sure to shadow the president as he embarks Friday on his first overseas trip as president.

The Wednesday meeting between Trump, Lavrov and Kislyak had already raised alarm bells in Washington, primarily because it came one day after Trump chose to fire Comey while the bureau investigated his campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation. "I have people brief me on great intel every day", he said.

President Trump shared intelligence from Israel in a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, a report says.

US allies including Australia, New Zealand and Japan cited the White House denials and said intelligence sharing would continue.

As Trump prepares for his first foreign trip for the Middle East and Europe, lawmakers from both parties demanded a full accounting of the conversation with the Russian diplomats that some feared could lead to exposure of confidential informants helping US intelligence officials counter the Islamic State.

Former Defense Secretary and CIA Director Leon Panetta called Trump a "loose cannon" Tuesday morning in an appearance on CNN. "The President only discussed the common threats that both countries faced".

Defiant Trump says he had 'absolute right' to share information with Russia
Trump says he wanted to share with Russian Federation "facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety". Trump's claims, calling the reports that the US president disclosed intelligence "complete nonsense".

Doing so "could be a risk for our sources", said the official, who spoke only on condition that neither he nor his country be identified, because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. He said Trump discussed a range of subjects with the Russians, including "common efforts and threats regarding counter-terrorism".

American presidents have the power to unilaterally disclose any material - even the most secret intelligence - without going through any kind of formal process, or worrying about prosecution.

Other key points brought up by McMaster during the press briefing included his concern that the leak to the Post about what went on inside closed doors between foreign officials and the president could have potentially hurt national security.

The disclosure also risks harming his credibility with USA partners around the world ahead of his first overseas trip.

But as with the abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey last week, most GOP lawmakers are restrained in their criticism of Trump. The national security advisor added that the President did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known, adding: "I was in the room".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who met with Lavrov at the State Department before the foreign minister's visit to the White House last week, released a statement on the situation.

He has been among the most outspoken Republicans in New Jersey during Trump's tenure. Critics accused him of seeking to short-circuit an investigation into whether Trump campaign associates colluded with Russians who sought to influence last year's election.

Brownlee said a resolution to the situation in Syria requires a concerted effort from the US and Russian Federation, and he hoped the meeting between Mr. Trump and Lavrov would prove "a step towards that".

"Crooked Hillary Clinton and her team 'were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.' Not fit!" wrote Trump on Twitter last July.
