US security adviser says Trump did not cause lapse in national security

Andrew Little

He then revealed that Trump was not briefed on the source of the information shared with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Moscow s ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

McMaster did not say, when asked directly, whether the president revealed confidential information.

On Capitol Hill, as news of the disclosure spread, senators on both sides of the aisle indicated their displeasure with the report. "The President of The United States can not just do or say or speak whatever the hell he wants. I have people brief me on great intel every day".

The Trump White House has had a chaotic couple of weeks.

"Never before have I witnessed a senior government official so carelessly threaten an intelligence-sharing relationship", a former senior intelligence official told CNN.

The instability, although driven by Trump, has in some ways extended and amplified the effect Russian Federation sought to achieve with its unprecedented campaign to undermine the 2016 presidential race.

That information had apparently been received from another country and was not America's to share.

McMaster said the "premise" of the report was false and what Trump discussed in the meeting was "wholly appropriate".

One: "They did not discuss anything having to do with the United States' decision to expel diplomats or impose censure against Russia", Pence said January 15 on CBS.

The official spoke only on condition that neither he nor his country be identified, because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Trump did not directly reveal the source of the information, but intelligence officials told CNN that there is concern that Russian Federation will be able to figure out the highly sensitive source.

Later Tuesday, Trump told reporters he'd had a "very, very successful meeting" with Lavrov.

Security Adviser Says Trump Did Not Cause Lapse in National Security
A statement from Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell read in part: "This story is false". He wasn't briefed on the source and method of the information either", McMaster told reporters.

Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday on Capitol Hill. John McCain, R. -Ariz., said the intelligence sharing was "deeply disturbing".

The two top Republicans in Congress, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, were muted in their response to Trump giving information to Russian Federation.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said: "These reports, if true, are of the gravest possible concern". But this kind of information was so "highly classified" that disclosing it could subject any other person to jail time.

The Democratic National Committee released a scathing statement in which it said Trump's actions "could end with him in handcuffs" if he were not the president. McMaster said Bossert's calls came "maybe from an overabundance of caution".

Earlier in the day, McMaster ran into a group of reporters in the White House seeking comment on the story.

Rep. Mike Gallager, a Wisconsin Republican in his first term, tweeted "For the objective of transparency, the White House should share a transcript of the meeting with the House and Senate intelligence committees". The nature of specific threats was discussed, he said, but not sources, methods or military operations.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer cast the problem as unauthorized leaking of sensitive or classified information about the meeting as "frankly unsafe". "He made the decision in the context of the conversation, which was wholly appropriate".

In a later tweet, Trump took aim at "LEAKERS in the intelligence community", a frequent target of his months-old administration.

Booker has been a tough critic of Trump and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "We have to make sure we have a high degree of confidence in all our organizations so we can do what we need to do for the president". His criticism has been followed by a steady stream of leaks to the media that have been damaging to Trump and exposed an FBI investigation into his associates' possible ties to Russian Federation.

The NSA was also at the heart of the Edward Snowden drama, which revealed that the USA spied on world leaders, including close allies.

The disclosures roiled the administration as it struggled to move past the backlash over Trump's abrupt firing on May 9 of FBI Director James Comey, who was investigating potential ties between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. The revelation also prompted cries of hypocrisy.

As usual, the 10 P.M. block on Fox News was another beast entirely, with host Sean Hannity spinning a tertiary alternate universe where Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump, had just mishandled classified intelligence.
