Trump claims 'absolute right' to disclose information to Russian Federation

Trump's messages came after his top foreign policy advisers raced to contain political damage from a Washington Post report that the president revealed to Russia's foreign minister and ambassador highly classified information from a US intelligence partner about an Islamic State plot.

"The story that came out tonight as reported is false", McMaster told reporters during an on-camera appearance at the White House.

According to the USA official, Trump shared details with top Russian officials about an Islamic State terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft.

The move was met with condemnation from Democrats, and some Republicans, on Capitol Hill, who said the revelation could jeopardize intelligence sources on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and make allies more reluctant to share intelligence with the U.S.

In both cases, the White House sought to distance itself from potentially problematic dealings having to do with Russian Federation; and in both cases, Trump totally undercut the messages of multiple top aides and basically confirmed the damaging storyline they were trying to beat back.

President Donald Trump's conversation with the Russian ambassador and foreign minister was "wholly appropriate" National Security Advisor Gen. H.R. McMaster told reporters Tuesday.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that Trump disclosed highly classified information about ISIS in last week's meeting with Russian officials.

Senior German lawmaker Burkhard Lischka told the Associated Press that if the president "passes this information to other governments at will, then Trump becomes a security risk for the entire western world".

There is no reason to assert presidential authority to share information if it was the kind of vanilla information McMaster and Powell led us to believe.

He went on to add that the president wasn't even aware of where the information came from because he had not been briefed on the source.

Trump "revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies", the official said.

Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that he had an "absolute right" to share information about terrorism and flight safety.

No US media were allowed into the meeting.

The anonymous officials told the Post that the information Trump relayed during the Oval Office meeting had been provided by a US partner through an intelligence-sharing arrangement. He said Trump discussed a range of subjects with the Russians, including "common efforts and threats regarding counter-terrorism". Last week, White House spokespeople stepped forward to explain the circumstances under with FBI Director James B. Comey had been fired, pointing to his handling of the Hillary Clinton investigation and saying the decision originated in the Justice Department.

Trump later was informed that he had broken protocol and White House officials placed calls to the National Security Agency and the CIA looking to minimize any damage.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the intelligence uproar a distraction from GOP priorities such as tax reform and replacing the health care law.

Leon Panetta, a former secretary of defense and Central Intelligence Agency director, said Trump had a responsibility to be more careful with sensitive information. Trump's tweets did not say whether he revealed classified information about the Islamic State, as published reports have said and as a USA official told The Associated Press.

American national security experts reacted with alarm to the news. He said that during that exchange the nature of specific threats were discussed, but they did not discuss sources, methods or military operations.

The controversy engulfed the White House.

Version One: White House aides initially disputed the premise of the reporting.

Muffled yelling was heard coming from the area near the room, but after a reporter tweeted about the noise, press staffers quickly turned up their television volume, blasting the sound to drown out everything else.
