Android Studio 3.0 Will Bring Native Support for Kotlin

Kotlin being officially supported by Google to such degree is big news given Android apps have been primarily written in Java, and this alternative offers a new and different approach that many are welcoming as breath of fresh air in Android development.

At its Google I/O 2017 developer conference, Google just announced that Android is getting official support for Kotlin programming language.

The interested people can go ahead and download Android Studio preview and try out options like "Convert Java File to Kotlin File". Kotlin's primary sponsor is JetBrains, the company behind tools like IntelliJ. As things stand right now, JetBrains will keep developing Kotlin for all platforms and an update on their efforts will likely follow later this year. The company notes that some have already adopted the programming language for their production apps, including Expedia, Flipboard, Pinterest, and Square. Kotlin is also somewhat similar to Java, the default Android development programming language, as both are object-oriented and typed statically, meaning that the variables they're dealing with are known at the point they're compiled.

We want to thank Google and the Android team for their trust in Kotlin, but above all we want to thank you, our community, our users. Kotlin can call Java and vice-versa.

This means you can add as little or as much Kotlin into your existing codebase as you want, mixing the two languages freely within the same project. Starting with Android Studio 3.0, Kotlin is included out-of-the-box, so there are no additional setup steps or add-ons to install. We'll be updating this article with more information.
