Confederate Monument No. 3 Down, but 4th Won't Be So Easy

Confederate Monument No. 3 Down, but 4th Won't Be So Easy

We are in a predominantly African-American city, a predominantly Democratic voting block city - if this goes to a vote, a lot of people feel it would have gone right down race and party lies and it would have been overwhelming to remove the monuments.

Beauvoir is where Jefferson Davis lived during retirement.

A legal dispute about the ownership of the land where the Beauregard statue was has been settled and the leaders of the Monumental Task Committee tell reporters they have exhausted all legal remedies to try to block the removal of this statue at City Park. The last one set to come down is of General Robert E. Lee.

NOPD officers have put barricades in place in City Park near the PGT Beauregard monument, fueling speculation that the statue is coming down as soon as tonight, WGNO reports. As a reminder, vandalism of any public property is strictly prohibited. The city said Tuesday that due to "intimidation, threats, and violence, serious safety concerns remain" so it would not announce a timeline for Lee's removal.

Landrieu and his office have consistently said the four Confederate monuments - which, in addition to Lee, include statues of Jefferson Davis and P.G.T Beauregard and an obelisk commemorating the Battle of Liberty Place - should be placed somewhere in their "proper context", but there has yet to be consensus as to what that will be once all four are removed.

New Orleans is still planning to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. They will be crated and stored during this process.

Dick's Sporting Goods plunge on same-store sales disappoint
Following the completion of the sale, the director now owns 119,171 shares in the company, valued at approximately $5,807,202.83. Dick's Sporting Goods Inc . shares decreased -6.16 percent over the past week and fell -4.21 percent over the previous month.

The City Council voted 6-1 in 2015 to remove the monuments after a succession of contentious public meetings where impassioned supporters and opponents heckled each other.

"In 2001, in MS, the Confederate flag that flies over the Capitol went to a vote in 2001, that is a majority white state", Mackel said.

"We shouldn't be intimidated by these out-of-towners who come here to scare the residents and police", said Take Em Down NOLA member Belva Kelly. In 1989, construction on Canal Street forced the removal of the monument, but it was relocated to its past location on Iberville Street in 1993.

A New Orleans Police mounted patrol circles the statue of Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard as the statue is prepared for removal from the entrance to City Park in New Orleans, Tuesday, May 16, 2017. "New Orleans is one of the highest crime rate cities in the nation".

The statue - which honors the man who led a Confederate army in the attack that launched the Civil War - is the third of four Confederate-era monuments vowed to take down, according to the city. However, earlier Tuesday, City Park officials said they could not find documentation that the park owns the statue, clearing the way for the statue to be removed. "Statues of this type are tangible symbols of a state of mind which was powerful and pervasive throughout the South well into the twentieth century and some would say even today".
