Trump documentary stirs up start of Cannes film festival

This year marks the 70th birthday of the world's biggest film festival, with A-listers including Nicole Kidman, Clint Eastwood and Will Smith set to grace the glitzy French resort amid "unprecedented" tight security.

Arnaud Desplechin's "Ismael's Ghosts", with Mathieu Amalric, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Cotillard, was the opening-night film.

Eagerly awaited screenings include Happy End, the latest offering by two-time Palme d'Or victor Michael Haneke.

"Those rules make France number one in admissions in Europe, those rules make the French cinema more present in film festivals around the world than the English, Spanish, German etc". However, the actor is quick to point out that his directors also deserve equal credit.

Filmmakers are also dealing with terrorism, civil wars and climate change.

Fatih Akin's "In the Fade", part of the competition section, tells the story of a woman whose life collapses after the death of her husband and son in a bomb attack.

Sri Lankan Jude Ratnam's "Demons in Paradise", in the special screenings section, is about the civil war and its aftermath while former United States vice-president Al Gore continues with his climate change documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" in a new work, "An Inconvenient Truth Sequel: Truth to Power" directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk.

For instance, Photos will notice when you take a shot of a friend and nudge you to send it to her, so you don't forget. Wednesday's keynote takes place at an outdoor theater near the company's Mountain View, California, headquarters.

"Okja", South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's follow-up to smash-hit "Snowpiercer", will be released in Korean theaters on June 29 for an open run, its American investor and local distributor said on Monday. "Time to Go" is his diploma work.

Competition screenings usually begin with the films least likely to court Palme attention, but this year they're front-loaded with the likes of Wonderstruck, which is already generating Oscar buzz, and Andrey Zvyagintsev's Loveless, a missing- child drama from the Russian director whose previous film Leviathan energized the 2014 Cannes fest with its scathing critique of life under Vladimir Putin's rule.

However, since neither film was originally slated for French cinema release after first being shown online, the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF) complained strongly to festival organisers.

Cannes welcomes the Mistress of Ceremonies of the upcoming Films Festival.

A year ago too, India had no feature films in the official selection. But Netflix and the festival have recently crossed swords over Netflix's refusal to have a proper theatrical release in France for Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories, as the online entity stubbornly sticks to its business plan of releasing films only on TV and computer screens, with rare exceptions.

French filmmaker Agnes Varda join hands with compatriot and photographer JR, known only by his pseudonym to create open-air photographic galleries in their venture, "Faces Places". This new measure will apply from the 2018 edition of the Festival International du Film de Cannes onwards.

The festival will run up to May 28.
