1 firefighter killed, 2 seriously hurt in San Antonio fire

Firefighter killed 2 seriously hurt in massive Texas strip mall fire

Hood said firefighters had entered the structure to perform search and rescue because there was concern at the time of evening that there could be people inside.

Firefighters were called to a strip mall in the 6700 block of Ingram Road for a blaze that erupted at about 9 p.m.

Two firefighters were pulled out of the building.

He said two other firefighters were transported to area hospitals. One was taken to the San Antonio Military Medical Center in Priority 1 condition. Their conditions were not released by the hospitals, but Hood said both were expected to be OK. "We started having structural collapses, and we had to go defensive", he said.

KENS reports that firefighter Scott Deem, a six-year veteran of the department, was killed in the blaze.

Wenger's future at Arsenal will be decided after FA Cup final
They are sitting fifth in the standings, one point behind fourth-placed Liverpool and three behind third-placed Manchester City. It's hard to know what will happen, but there is at least a more concrete time frame as to when his future will be revealed.

Since firefighters had to take a "defensive" approach in fighting the flames, fire officials say they had to make the hard decision to leave Deem behind. He said they don't ever want to leave a firefighter behind, but they would have lost 15 or 20 more firefighters had they stayed inside.

Hood says the firefighters who were on scene were taken to a crisis intervention team.

"We're taking care of them and we have them at a station".

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood says Scott Deem died while trying to put out the flames. "But we're going to continue to do the good job that we always do", Hood said.
