Chaffetz to resign, raising doubts about Trump probe

Citing several senior House Republicans, Politico reports Gowdy would replace Jason Chaffetz, the Utah Republican who is planning to step down from his congressional seat. He first made the announcement in a statement on his website, ending weeks of speculation about his plans. He will reportedly join Fox News.

Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes said Wednesday in a caucus meeting that the Republican Chaffetz is expected to announce his resignation soon and that it would take effect by June 30.

A SC congressman could soon take on one of the most powerful jobs in the U.S. Congress.

Later, Chaffetz said he might not even finish his term, which ends in January 2019.

"I don't want to presuppose what he's going to say and what he's going to do", Herbert said. "In large part, I'm still putting that together".

Chaffetz previously has not ruled out another run for public office at some point in the future. His campaign registered the Web domains JasonChaffetz2028.com and Jason2028.com in early April.

Last month, Chaffetz stunned the political world by saying he would leave Congress before his current term ends in 2018.

Chaffetz now serves as the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Donald Trump is in 'impeachment territory,' former Nixon adviser says
The Senate meets Thursday with Rod Rosenstein, the Deputy Attorney whose memo was used to justify Comey's ouster. The reports were based on a memo Comey wrote in February after meeting with the president.

A top Utah state lawmaker has said U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz may leave office by the end of June, a move that would call into question the future of the House Oversight Committee's investigation of President Donald Trump and his campaign's ties with Russian Federation.

He's also asking Comey to appear before his committee next week, following The New York Times's bombshell report that Trump pressured him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

It is unclear who would succeed Mr. Chaffetz as chair of the House committee. Chaffetz later said that the negative reception was the result of "paid protesters".

Chaffetz is the second House Republican who is stepping away from a Trump investigation. Chaffetz asked host Tucker Carlson.

"I think the Clinton email investigation is still not complete, and it is such importance to the nation", he said.

With several investigations still ongoing, Chaffetz said he was not anxious about other Republican members of the committee continuing his work.

"I loved being in the driver's seat, but. there are lots of good people who care about these issues and are well-suited to carry out these investigations", he said.
