Deadline to register to vote in General Election 2017 just days away

HAVE YOUR SAY The voter registration deadline is looming

Voters are being advised to check that they are registered to vote in the election, on June 8, and to check whether they will need to cast their vote in a different way during the holiday season.

The deadline for registering to vote is on Monday.

Due to the short time available between now and election day, the Electoral Commission has advised that Britons living overseas who are registered to vote should apply for a proxy vote at this stage, due to the short time-frame. Voting by post is an easy and convenient alternative to voting in person.

You will need your National Insurance number and, if you're a British citizen living overseas, your passport as well.

When voting for the candidate you would like to see represent you in the House of Commons, put a cross (X) next to their name on the ballot paper. Make sure you keep in mind to sign and put your date of birth on your postal vote statement and include it with your postal vote when returning it. Numbers tripled to more than 100,000 for the 2015 general election and then again more than doubled for the referendum, with around 264,000 registered at the end of past year.

RESIDENTS in west Cheshire are urged to make sure they will have a voice in the 2017 General Election.

In the last election, the national turnout was 66.4 per cent - meaning millions of people abstained. "We don't want anyone to miss out on this opportunity". Often people think that applying to pay council tax means you are added to the electoral register too, but that is not the case.

You can register to vote at gov.uk through an online form, which usually takes around five minutes to fill out.
