European Union fines Facebook £95m for 'misleading' WhatsApp data

European Union fines $122 million on Facebook over misleading Whats App data

Well at least, the commission confirmed it would not impact on the results of the merger review so Facebook only lost some money and hardly made a dent in its financial status for the quarter from the global view.

The European Union (EU) on Thursday announced it will fine Facebook 110 million euros ($122 million) for providing incorrect or misleading information in connection with the 2014 purchase of mobile messaging service WhatsApp.

Facebook tried to save face claiming that it had originally acted in good faith in its deliberations with the antitrust officials and that it was not going to appeal the penalty. A number of privacy watchdogs have also criticized the social network and tried to convince, founder of WhatsApp, Jan Koum to suspend sharing user data with the company until the legal issues are put to bed.

According to the commission, Facebook staff were well aware of how to link WhatsApp phone numbers with a Facebook user's identities, but instead they kept the information hidden. The Commission considered the infringements serious because they were prevented from having all relevant information for the assessment of the transaction. Yet, the fine indicates that European authorities are expanding their examination of Facebook similarly as it winds up noticeably one of the biggest innovation organizations on the planet.

Competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said: "Today's decision sends a clear signal to companies that they must comply with all aspects of European Union merger rules, including the obligation to provide correct information. The Commission must be able to take decisions about mergers' effects on competition in full knowledge of accurate facts", she said.

Wenger's future at Arsenal will be decided after FA Cup final
They are sitting fifth in the standings, one point behind fourth-placed Liverpool and three behind third-placed Manchester City. It's hard to know what will happen, but there is at least a more concrete time frame as to when his future will be revealed.

"It imposes a proportionate and deterrent fine on Facebook".

FB, of course, denies intentionally lying to the EC, and gave what is essentially the multi-billion dollar corporation's version of "oops, we didn't mean to".

On 3 October 2014, the European Commission, the guardian of competition in Europe, had given the green light for the ultimate acquisition of WhatsApp from Facebook for $ 22 billion.

After investigating, the Commission concluded that Facebook must have known of this possibility at the time of the merger, and thus mislead the Commission.
