Former US Rep. Anthony Weiner faces charges in sexting case

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former NY congressman and estranged husband of top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, is expected to plead guilty Friday to a single count of transferring obscene material to a minor for allegedly texting an underage girl in North Carolina.

But it is reported he will admit a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor, as part of a plea deal with the United States attorney's office in Manhattan, after surrendering to the Federal Bureau of Investigation early Friday morning. He admitted exchanging online messages with the girl beginning in January 2015 and "sharing explicit images and encouraging her to engage in sexually explicit conduct".

David Schaefer, a spokesman for the law firm Covington & Burling, whose attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, is representing Weiner, said the former congressman's lawyer will comment later Friday.

Federal prosecutors had been weighing whether to file child pornography charges against the disgraced ex-Democratic congressman since a year ago, sources previously told NBC 4 NY. He faces between no jail time and ten years at sentencing, it said.

Weiner, who is separated from top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, appeared before a federal judge in a Manhattan court and agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote will determine Weiner's punishment at his sentencing on September 8.

(Weiner) "We issued a statement, there's nothing else".

"These destructive impulses brought great devastation to family and friends, and destroyed my life's dream of public service", Weiner told Preska. "And yet I remained in denial, even as the world around me fell apart". "I entered intensive treatment, found the courage to take a moral inventory of my defects, and began a program of recovery and mental health treatment that I continue to follow every day". "I am filled with regret and heartbroken for those I have hurt", he said.

Anthony Weiner, whose "sexting" scandals ended his political career and involved him in an FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton before the presidential election, is set to plead guilty in a NY court later.

Weiner quickly left the Manhattan courthouse after the proceedings, being hustled into a waiting vehicle and taking no questions from the throngs of reporters. He said nothing to reporters. His wife, Huma Abedin, was not in court.

Abedin filed for divorce last summer after a new round of explicit messages emerged that included an image of Weiner's crotch as he lay in bed with their young son.

The FBI began investigating Weiner in September after the 15-year-old North Carolina girl told a tabloid news site, the Daily Mail, that she and the disgraced former politician had exchanged lewd messages for several months.

She also accused him of asking her to undress on camera.

Schaefer would not confirm if the plea was part of a deal.

That inquiry was brief. Clinton has said that Comey's announcement was part of why she lost the election. He said he ended the habit, but it resurfaced in 2013, leading him to pull out of the race for NY mayor that year.
