Homeland Security considers banning laptops on all flights

Expansion Of U.S. Airplane Laptop Ban Would Discount FAA Concerns About In Flight FiresMore

Now, the Trump administration is considering expanding its ban on laptops to commercial US-bound flights from Europe.

A senior European transport official said the aviation industry was expecting the U.S.to extend the ban to Europe, and described the situation as "a total mess".

European airlines are preparing for the anticipated widening of a USA ban on bringing laptops and other large electronic devices on board planes bound for American airports.

While DHS spokesman David Lapan told the news agency that no official announcement would come Thursday, he did confirm DHS Secretary John Kelly met with U.S. senators from relevant oversight committees to brief them on classified issues including "threats to aviation".

A French official with direct knowledge about Friday's meeting said France planned to push back against the measure, saying there was no information to suggest a significant increase in the terror threat.

Critics of the laptop and electronic device ban say placing hundreds of lithium batteries in luggage holds could present fire risks. "DHS continues to evaluate the threat environment and will make changes when necessary to keep air travellers safe".

I get that it could be quite easy for a terrorist to hide explosives inside an electronic device, it has happened before after all.

Trump says he's 'very close' to naming an FBI director
The White House declined to comment to Politico , while Lieberman's office had not yet replied as of the publication of its story. Lieberman is now a senior counsel at the NY law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres Friedman LLP, which has represented Trump for years .

CNN has reported that USA intelligence and law enforcement agencies believe that the Islamic State group and other terrorist organizations have developed new ways to plant explosives in electronic devices that could evade some common airport security screening methods.

However, this move is increasing fears in the aviation industry that as well as guarding against bombs this ban could actually endanger flights.

More than 350 flights a day travel from Europe to the U.S. But, it's not just the airlines that would be hit.

The U.S.in March banned in-cabin laptops and larger electronics on flights from 10 Middle Eastern and North African airports.

Affected airlines included Royal Jordanian Airlines, Egypt Air, Turkish Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways.

The ban was first implemented in March, and is in place for U.S. flights departing 10 airports in Muslim-majority countries.
