India supports united, sovereign Palestine: PM Modi to President Abbas

Also on Monday, the US's new - and controversial - Israeli ambassador, David Friedman, arrived in Israel to take up his post, days ahead of a visit by United States president Donald Trump.

He also spoke to Modi about his conversation with US President Donald Trump, when he visited Washington last month, with Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

We take the president at his words.

Israel published a list of 19 demands reportedly made by Palestinian hunger strike leader Marwan Barghouti on Monday, including access to 20 TV channels and air conditioning. MoUs on cooperation in various areas are expected to be signed during the visit.

The families blasted a U.S. effort in 2013 led by then-Secretary of State John Kerry to restart peace talks, in the framework of which Israel released a number of convicted Palestinian terrorists as a gesture to the Palestinians.

Israel is among India's closest partners in intelligence-sharing.

Meanwhile, India and the Palestinians inked five agreements to enhance cooperation in the fields of IT (information technology) and health, among others.

Ahead of Abbas' visit, India reiterated its "political support" to the Palestinian cause and had said that it continued to assist developmental projects there.

Pitching for peace in West Asia, India on Tuesday urged that a future state of Palestine should coexist peacefully with Israel.

Modi said the India is looking froward to enhance cultural exchanges by adding new elements including yoga.

On day two, he will meet with Modi, his Indian counterpart, Pranab Mukherjee, and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj after a ceremonial welcome at the presidential palace and laying a wreath at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial.

A group of Palestinian activists also blocked off commuter roads leading to Ramallah in the central occupied West Bank for the second day on Monday morning, demanding more solidarity actions to support Palestinian prisoners on a Hunger strike at both official and popular levels, Ma'an reported. Mr Monaghan was a member of the delegation that undertook the first official SNP visit to Israel and Palestine in November a year ago. Rashtrapatiji (the President) will host a banquet in honour of H.E. Mahmoud Abbas.

In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, President Abbas on Monday had called for global backing for the peace efforts and asked for India's involvement.

He reiterated the Palestinian commitment to the two-state solution that would lead to establishing an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 border, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in peace and harmony.
