Russia says US-coalition strike in Syria hit civilians -agencies

Without elaborating, a Syrian military source said the airstrike had hit "one of our military points", state TV reported.

The army in a statement said the US-led anti-terror coalition attacked one of the military positions near the Tanf area on Thursday, leaving many personnel dead and causing some material losses, Xinhua news agency reported.

A United States military strike in Syria on Thursday was "government terrorism" and caused a massacre, Syrian government negotiator Bashar al-Ja'afari said on Friday.

"The Syrian Arab Army is fighting terrorism on its territory, and no party has the right to determine the course of its operations", the Syrian military source added.

On April 7, US President Donald Trump ordered a missile strike on the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in response to the April 4 attack with chemical weapons which reportedly killed dozens of civilians, including many children, in Khan Sheikhun, Idlib province, in Northwest Syria.

Gatilov, who was speaking in Geneva, was cited as saying that the USA strike would hamper efforts to find a political solution to the conflict there. It also comes at a time when the US presence in Syria is becoming more visible, mostly in the northern parts of the country where American troops are backing Kurdish-led forces fighting the Islamic State group.

A militia aligned with the Syrian government was bombed by US forces in the southern part of that country according to a Pentagon official.

Nearly 23500 cholera cases, 242 deaths in Yemen in three weeks
According to the World Health Organization, two-thirds of the total population of the country are on the brink of starvation . On May 14, Yemen's Health Ministry declared a state of emergency in the capital Sana'a in connection with the epidemic.

He said: "This is completely unacceptable, this is a breach of Syrian sovereignty". When the Syrians insisted on proceeding into the area, the US planes were cleared to fire.

Unlike the United States strike against the al-Shayrat air base in March, which the Trump administration ordered in retaliation for a regime chemical weapons attack, Thursday's strike seemed created to protect the U.S. forces based at Tanf.

Separately, Syria's military supported by Russian Federation and Iranian-backed militias are fighting against the jihadist group, and against more moderate rebel factions in the south.

A Syrian opposition media group, the Palmyra News Network, said there were casualties from the attack, which destroyed a number of vehicles.

Speaking to reporters, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said the US will defend its troops in case of "aggressive" steps against them.

The US military launched the attack against a convoy of the Syrian military heading towards the border near Jordan where Daesh terrorists are based.
