Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation

The briefing came a day after Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation in that country's attempts to improperly influence the 2016 election.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Thursday that he knew President Trump would fire former FBI Director James Comey before he issued a memo recommending his removal, according to several senators briefed by Rosenstein.

"The entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion", he said.

The congressman said "Former Director Mueller is a well-respected law enforcement professional who served the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a dozen years under both the Democratic and Republican presidents".

Trump decried the appointment of the special counsel as "the single greatest witch-hunt" in U.S. history.

"The special counsel has no legal or other obligation to interface or interact at all with Congress about the substance of the investigation", Frenkel said. He has served presidents of both political parties and, after taking the director job days before the September 11 attacks, oversaw the FBI's terrorism-fighting efforts over the next decade.

Trump's complaints that he was being subjected to an unprecedented "witch hunt" ignored history, given that President Bill Clinton was investigated by an independent counsel, Ken Starr, in a probe that resulted in Clinton's impeachment by the House of Representatives. One part of the Senate SCIF is large enough to hold all 100 senators, a senior aide said.

To hear Trump tell it, he wasn't anxious.

The four congressional committees are largely counterintelligence investigations focused on what role Russia played in the 2016 presidential election, that alleged Russian interference. Both Senators Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken attended the highly unusual closed-door briefing by Rosenstein.

He said he ended the habit, but it resurfaced in 2013, leading him to pull out of the race for NY mayor that year. Clinton has said that Comey's announcement was part of why she lost the election.

Also in a joint press conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos at the White House, Trump again insisted that there was no collusion between his campaign and Moscow.

"I look forward to this matter concluding quickly", Mr. Trump said in the statement.

"He did acknowledge that he knew Comey would be removed prior to him writing his memo", Sen.

"It's clear he just wanted to defer to Mueller on everything tough", said one Democratic lawmaker inside the room, who added that Rosenstein didn't address most questions and described his demeanor as "frustratingly cautious".

"No", the President said emphatically when asked about Comey and Flynn.

Mr Rosenstein threatened to resign from the Justice Department because of the explanation that White House officials were giving reporters about the firing, said a person close to the White House, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Mr Comey was heading the bureau's Russian Federation and Trump campaign investigation.

Responding to question about the call for his impeachment as raised by the Democrats, Trump said it is ridiculous and maintained that the United States is progressing under his rule. Trump himself had already contradicted that explanation, telling interviewers earlier that he had already made a decision to dismiss Comey.

"He learned the president's decision to fire him and then he wrote his memo with his rationale", Senator Durbin said. "If there has to be a special counsel, they made an excellent choice", said Rep. Peter King, a Republican from NY.
