Trump has reportedly punted on moving the Israeli embassy

Construction in Kiryat Sefer

Trump reached the decision after he was warned that moving the embassy could aggravate his nascent efforts at rebooting the peace process at a time when the USA has seen encouraging initial signs from the Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel lays claim to the entirety of Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital while Palestinians want its eastern part as the capital of their future state.

Carter also said he believed that the United States "should have communication with (North Koreans) and still insist on the overall compliance, even by North Korea, of the basic principles of peace and human rights".

The decision comes as top officials at the State Department, Pentagon and in the intelligence community warned Trump against the bold move, explaining that it could hurt chances of restarting peace talks between Israel and Palestinians.

Trump has boasted that with his negotiating skills he can bring Israelis and Palestinians together to resolve one of the world's most intractable conflicts and do "the ultimate deal".

President Trump is likely to put off moving the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - he's expected to sign a waiver at the end of the month that will keep the embassy in Tel Aviv for the time being.

Israel complained that a USA representative rejected allowing Israel's prime minister to join Trump for a visit to the Western Wall because it isn't in Israeli territory. Netanyahu is a determined advocate of moving the US embassy there.

Amid speculation that Washington could push for a regional peace conference, Netanyahu has conferred with advisers on what he would have to offer if he wants to draw in Saudi Arabia and Gulf states in a bid for broader Arab-Israeli rapprochement, Israeli officials said.

Also on the campaign trail, Trump clearly promised to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. It is widely assumed that Israel would retain control over the site under a potential peace deal.

Yet in an interview with Israel Hayom, a pro-Netanyahu paper, Trump said his plans "could still change" and suggested he might ask Netanyahu to join him, a last-minute move that would please Netanyahu but anger the Palestinians.

USA presidential trips are an opportunity to project power and burnish statesmanship.

Pax Christi International Wednesday called on Israel to immediately enter into serious dialogue with Palestinian prisoners who have been on a hunger strike for 32days.

"Of course, the Palestinians also have to be willing to recognize Israel as a nation living side by side with them in peace", the elder statesman added.
