Turkish Security Assaults Protestors In Washington DC

The Turkish embassy released a statement on May 17 that contradicted USA officials and video evidence, blaming instead the demonstrators, who, it said, had been "aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the president".

Mehmet Tankan, 31, said he was one of a dozen protesters outside the ambassador's residence chanting slogans when the brawl broke out. Erdogan's visit to Washington D.C.in March 2016 was also marred by fights between his supporters and protesters, and members of his security detail were caught on video trying to eject journalists critical of his administration prior to a planned speech at the Brookings Institution.

The United States said it summoned Turkey's ambassador to the State Department, where the No. 2-ranked USA diplomat raised concerns about the security detail for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Washington, after they were captured on video violently breaking up a protest.

The US State Department has summoned the Turkish ambassador after Tuesday's violent confrontation between protesters and Turkish security personnel in Washington, DC.

Eleven people were injured, including one police officer, in what law enforcement called a "brutal attack".

Turkey's leader and his security team are guests in the United States. The guards surrounded a middle-aged man who had been kicked to the ground and was kicked repeatedly in the face.

"We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms", said Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman.

Erdogan was in Washington, DC to meet with President Donald Trump (pictured together on Tuesday), who praised him as a loyal ally in the battle against Islamic extremism.

Turkey's embassy blamed the violence on demonstrators, saying they aggressively provoked Turkish-American citizens gathered to see Erdogan.

"This kind of thing cannot go un-responded to diplomatically", said McCain, suggesting that the United States sue the Turkish government if the bodyguards responsible for the violence can't be identified.

"The Metropolitan Police Department made two arrests following yesterday's incidents and we have every intention to pursue charges against the other individuals involved", the statement continued.

"All of the sudden they just ran towards us", Yazidi Kurd demonstrator Lucy Usoyan told WJLA.

"The Turkish-Americans responded in self-defense", the statement said.
