Vegas police: Martial arts chokehold used in deadly chase

Hawaii Department of Public Safety shows Tashii Brown known to them as Tashii Farmer-Brown. He was released from state custody in January 2016 according to the

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Relatives of an unarmed man who died after a struggle with a police officer outside a Las Vegas casino want the officer fired and brought up on criminal charges for repeatedly using a stun gun and then placing the man in an unauthorized chokehold, an attorney for the family said Thursday.

The attorney says Las Vegas police should also stop using stun guns and neck restraints.

McMahill said Lopera was heard saying he used a "rear naked choke", a prominent mixed martial arts chokehold that differs from a department-approved technique that some departments call a "lateral vascular neck restraint" and others refer to as a carotid artery hold. It is not authorized by Las Vegas police.

Police say Brown couldn't be revived after an officer grabbed him in the neck hold. Brown was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The officers said Brown was sweating, and he looked panicked as he told them people were chasing him.

His mother said he sometimes hyphenates his last name, Farmer-Brown.

In the casino driveway at 1 a.m., Lopera thought Brown was trying to carjack a pickup truck with two people inside, McMahill said.

Las Vegas police train to use a version of a chokehold created to avoid restricting the airway while cutting the flow of blood to the brain.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, which led a push for use-of-force reforms after Las Vegas police were involved in 25 shootings in 2010, said Monday, May 15, 2017, it will seek a review of the training that allows officers to use the technique. The officers tried to talk to him, but then Brown took off running, Metro said. He didn't run away at his fastest pace.

Trump may be regretting this tweet about 'Crooked Hillary' right about now
On Tuesday, Trump defended the sharing of information during the meeting, saying he had "the absolute right to do" so. That's because in the United States, the system of classifying information has no legal basis.

Police in Las Vegas are due to report about the weekend death of an unarmed man after an officer used a neck hold on him that is banned in many cities.

Lopera, who has been with the agency for five years and hasn't spoken to investigators as recommended by representatives with the Las Vegas Police Protective Union, is on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues. He was released from state custody in January 2016, according to the department.

In Las Vegas, he pleaded guilty in February to misdemeanor driving under the influence.

"We'll be fully transparent and we will look at this event with a very critical eye", Lombardo said.

Farmer grew up in Hawaii, where he has two children, and he lived with his mother, Trinita Farmer, in Las Vegas.

Brown's cause of death has not been determined and an investigation is ongoing.

The evidence has been turned over to the Clark County Coroner's Office, and the Clark County District Attorney's Office also is looking at it, McMahill said, noting that significant updates would be provided in a timely manner.

She said that Brown was on the ground for several minutes and appeared to be unconscious before the cops used CPR to try to revive him.

The man, identified as 40-year-old Tashi Farmer, died in custody on May 14, but the video clearly showing the details of the incident has only recently been released. "I just want to bury my son".
