Assange seeks contact with US, UK officials

It's not known if US officials are seeking Assange's arrest because of a possible sealed indictment.

He said recent comments by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump in favor of arresting the Australian reaffirm Ecuador's belief that the rape charges against him were politically motivated and that Assange still faces a serious risk of prosecution.

Ny and Chief Prosecutor Ingrid Isgren were briefing reporters on the decision in Stockholm.

Sweden's top prosecutor on Friday dropped an investigation into a rape claim against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after nearly seven years, saying that's because there's no possibility of arresting him "in the foreseeable future".

From outside the embassy, Sky's Ashish Joshi said: "Assange sounded angry, he sounded triumphant and he sounded defiant".

Assange criticised the EU during his speech, and said: "The reality is detention and extradition without charge has become a feature of the European Union".

Earlier, Assange had used social media to vent his anger hours after the Swedish prosecution chose to drop its rape investigation against him.

Assange has said the United Kingdom is refusing to confirm or deny whether America has made an extradition request - and he insisted he is happy to engage with the US Justice Department. Marianne Ny, Sweden's director of public prosecutions, said the case may not be over in the future though.

"Whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail", Sessions said.

Samuelsson also said that the decision meant Assange "is free to leave the embassy whenever he wants", though he later told the TT news agency that he did not know when Assange might leave.

He has been living at the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012, and the British police have said they will arrest Assange as soon as he walks out of the embassy because he has broken his conditions for bail - a relatively minor offence under British law - by failing to surrender on June 29, 2012 for extradition to Sweden. Julian Assange's case in Sweden began in August 2010, a month after he leaked more than 90,000 documents, when two former WikiLeaks volunteers said they had been assaulted by Assange during sexual encounters.

The U.S. Justice Department has also said they were looking for way to indict Assange as well. "Focus now moves to United Kingdom". There were initially two separate allegations being investigated, but one was dropped in 2015 because the statute of limitations ran out.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has suggested that the arrest of Assange could be an American priority, saying last month the USA was "stepping up our efforts on all leaks". She said the WikiLeaks founder had "tried to dodge all attempts at arrest" by British and Swedish authorities.

The Metropolitan Police force says that there is a British warrant for Assange's arrest after he jumped bail in 2012, and it "is obliged to execute that warrant should he leave the embassy".

She told a news conference in Stockholm that the investigation could be reopened if Assange returns to Sweden before the statute of limitations lapses in 2020.

WikiLeaks has repeatedly infuriated USA officials with the widespread release of sensitive secret documents related to military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and diplomatic relations around the world.

It said the MPS will provide a level of resourcing which is proportionate to that offence.

"Today is an important victory for me and for the UN's human rights system but it by no means erases the years of detention without charge in prison, under house arrest and nearly five years here in this embassy without sunlight, seven years without charge while my children grew up without me".
