Danielle McLaughlin: Trump didn't just throw the Federal Bureau of Investigation boss under a bus

White House press secretary Sean Spicer speaks during the daily press briefing at the White House in Washington Friday

"I think that there are times when you more [often] than not read a story where someone's trying to pull apart one word, one sentence, and say "aha" and make it a "got you" thing", he said.

"I don't know", the foreign minister said in reply to a question about why a scandal had aroused in the United States media.

The New York Times reported that Trump pressed Comey for a pledge of loyalty over dinner only a week after his inauguration, according to an account by two associates of the lawman. "President Trump without a doubt understands that", Giuliani said.

On Twitter, Trump appeared to suggest that if Comey gave his version of contacts between them, the administration might produce tapes of conversations, although it was not clear if such tapes exist. That has led to speculation that Trump is considering replacing him.

Sen. Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the intelligence panel, said Friday that he expressed at his meeting with Rosenstein and Boente his preference that Rosenstein name a special prosecutor.

Spicer repeatedly said "the president has nothing further to add on that" and eventually insisted: "The tweet speaks for itself". Critics of the Trump administration's handling of the Russian Federation investigation have long held the view that a special prosecutor is needed.

Indeed, Rosenstein has privately vowed to lawmakers and staff that he plans to allow the bureau's investigation to move forward, uninhibited by pressures from the White House.

The President didn't attend in person, but Trump recorded a five-minute video message that was played for numerous Republican National Committee's 168 members and their guests Friday.

Women in Venezuela march to send a message about country's political crisis

Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason said.

US President Donald Trump was seemingly determined to fire FBI Director James Comey, left, and asked the Justice Department to create a paper trail for cover - a cover that ultimately did not hold up.

"He said it once at dinner and then he said it twice during phone calls", Trump added.

"It's improper", a former high-level Justice Department official said.

FBI Director James Comey is sworn-in on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, May 3, 2017, prior to testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing: "Oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The president's advisers said this week that Mr Trump fired Mr Comey on Tuesday in response to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. "I mean, agents go to jail for communicating details of investigations with subjects of investigations". It must be clear that Rosenstein will have final say on the FBI's Russian Federation inquiries.

Other candidates include former NY police commissioner Raymond Kelly, former Republican senator Kelly Ayotte, and South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor who headed the Benghazi investigation in the House.

"It sends the message that it doesn't matter what you find, because the White House sees this case as not anything for the President to worry about". While some of these Republicans are known for breaking ranks at times, such as Senator John McCain, many others - such as Corker and Burr - are mainstream Republicans who generally toe the party line.

Meanwhile, Reuters regarded Donald Trump's tweet as a "warning to ousted FBI Director James Comey not to talk to the media, a highly unusual move that prompted fresh charges the president is trying to silence the man who led an investigation into possible collusion between Trump's election campaign and Russian Federation". Shutting down news briefings, the association said in a statement, "would reduce accountability, transparency, and the opportunity for Americans to see that, in the USA system, no political figure is above being questioned".
