Google prepping Android Pay expansion, support for sending money to friends

Google Daydream

If you're unfamiliar with Google Home, the device is pitched as a dedicated assistant for the home, created to help with simple digital tasks around the house - such as switching lights on and off, performing web searches and answering questions, compiling shopping lists, playing music and so much more. Google Assistant is on more than 100 million devices after being on the market for slightly more than six months and now is trying to invade new territory with a free app released Wednesday that works on the operating system powering Apple's iPhone. Or point the camera at the exterior of a restaurant and it will pull up reviews of the place.

Google's assistant will be at a disadvantage on the iPhone, though, because Siri - a concierge that Apple introduced in 2011 - is built into that device. For starters, LG is partnering up with Google to embed the AI assistant inside its Signature line of appliances - an air purifier, refrigerator, and washing machine. As well as nifty new services like Google Lens, which uses your smarpthone's camera to identify objects in the real world. This probably doesn't come as unexpected, but you'll be seeing and hearing a lot more of the helpful artificial intelligence in your present or future smart home.

Both assistants can be summoned with a press of a button to answer questions, manage schedules and handle other routine tasks.

Google's computer programs are gaining a better understanding of the world, and now it wants them to handle more of the decision-making for the billions of people who use its services.

Google says new tools will encourage sharing of photos that you might have meant to share, but maybe forgot. Using the new capabilities, the app will spot photographs of individual friends and suggest that the user shares them with that person. The company envisions a world in which fantastic photos are no longer left on people's phones because other pressing things in life got in the way. Facebook has its own version of this feature in its Moments app.
