Jays call up OF prospect Alford

Joshua Sarner Icon Sportswire

The Blue Jays called up Darrell Ceciliani on Monday to fill the gap left by utilityman Steve Pearce after he hit the disabled list with a strained right calf muscle.

Dwight Smith Jr. joined the team Thursday to replace Pillar on the roster, but then Ceciliani injured his shoulder. The Jays issued a two-game suspension to Kevin Pillar yesterday, so they're a bit short-handed in the outfield at the moment. The 6-foot-1, 215 lb. center-fielder has been terrific so far this season at Double-A New Hampshire, hitting.325/.411/.455 with three homers and nine steals. The incident led to a benches-clearing altercation and Pillar has since apologized for his immature actions.

Of course, it's not clear that Alford's promotion will be long-term in nature.

In need of some outfield depth, the Toronto Blue Jays have promoted MLB.com's 62nd-best prospect, Anthony Alford, to the majors prior to the start of their weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. During the 2015 season, he slashed an impressive.298/.398/.421 in Single-A before slumping to a.236/.344/.378 line in an injury-ravaged 2016 campaign.

Ups-and-downs can be expected with just 33 games of Double-A on his resume, but Alford's combination of broad tools and consistently improving skills should make him a multi-category contributor and very solid regular in the long run.
