Lieberman Frontrunner For FBI Job

Former Oklahoma governor, OU regent interviewed for FBI director

President Trump said Thursday that Joe Lieberman was his top choice to become Federal Bureau of Investigation director, filling the slot left open after Trump fired James B. Comey, his previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head, last week.

Trump tipped Lieberman's status during a meeting with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

President Donald Trump's administration is considering appointing Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice presidential candidate, to fill former FBI Director James Comey's vacant position. Lieberman gave reporters a thumbs-up as he left the White House and said he and the president had a "good meeting". One source told CNN that the president met with Lieberman on May 17 and found him "agreeable" while Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions interviewed candidates after Trump fired Comey on May 9. Comey was overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's role in the presidential election, including ties between Russian government officials and Trump associates. In addition, the FBI Director is generally appointed for a 10-year term; Lieberman is 75 years old.

Lieberman, a former independent senator from CT, ran on a ticket with Democrat Al Gore in 2000, but they were defeated by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Lieberman has said little publicly in the past 24 hours as news has swirled about his possible nomination.

Lieberman has weighed in on some points of Trump's agenda since his election. In 2000, he was Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore's running mate.

His sentences for these crimes were to be served consecutively for a 98-year sentence and a possible parole date of October 2053. Under a 1984 agreement, Cuba agreed to take back 2,746 of their citizens who came to the United States as part of the boat lift.

Prior to Comey's firing, McCabe had been serving as his deputy since early 2016.

A November 25 news release from Trump's transition team quoted Lieberman praising Trump's selection of K.T. McFarland as deputy national security adviser. In January, he was the target of liberal scorn when he testified in favor of Trump's choice for Education Secretary, Betsy Devos, in her Senate confirmation hearings.

"I think the question is whether you want someone here with a political pedigree or you want somebody that has a law-enforcement pedigree, " Murphy said on the "Morning Joe" program on MSNBC. He has said he could name a director before he departs. He later registered as an Independent, but he continued to serve with the Democratic caucus in the Senate.

The former Democratic vice presidential nominee now works at the law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres in NY - the same firm as Trump's attorney Marc Kasowitz.

Despite initially opposing appointment of an independent counsel, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that the development "helps assure people and the Justice Department that they're going to go do their jobs independently and thoroughly, which is what we've called for all along". Some Senate Democrats hold a grudge against Lieberman for his rightward turn and opposition to some of President Barack Obama's agenda late in his Senate career. Lieberman lost his 2006 Democratic primary bid but won Senate re-election as a third party candidate.

Keating, a Republican, served as the 25th governor of Oklahoma from 1995 to 2003.
