There is only weeks between the US Open and the Open Championship at Birkdale and McIlroy is due to play in two events between them - the Travelers Championhsip in CT and the Irish Open, at Portstewart, the tournament he, himself, promotes.

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the BMW PGA Championship as he continues to battle a rib injury.

'It's a disappointing decision to have to make but I have to ensure my full recovery. However, McIlroy has announced that he will indeed continue to prepare for the heralded U.S. Open during his looming absence. "I felt a bit of stiffness on Sunday, hit a couple of drives, and didn't feel quite right".

"I'm conscious and trying to sleep on my right side and that's sort of facing away from Erica and she's like, 'Why?"

The European Tour reported their Chief Executive Keith Pelley said "There is no question that Rory will be missed at the BMW PGA Championship but his healthy is the most iprtant thing and we wish him a speedy recovery".
