New Orleans Ready To Take Down Controversial Gen. Robert E. Lee Statue

General P.G.T. Beauregard's long ride at the entrance of New Orleans' City Park came to an end late Tuesday night when workers took down the historic statue, among four Confederate monuments being removed despite protests.

Work began soon after sundown, and news outlets showed the statue being lifted off its base shortly after 3 a.m.

Officials have kept quiet about the plans until a statement was released Thursday on the eve of the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue, the last Confederate monument to come down.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is expected to give a speech marking the removal of the last of the four monuments on Friday afternoon.

New Orleans resolved in 2015 to take down some of the city's most visible and controversial Confederate monuments, its city council declaring they were "public nuisances" that did not reflect the city's diversity or full history.

Landrieu also said that the removal would cause some traffic issues with the following street closures: Moss Street between Desaix Boulevard and Esplanade Avenue and North Carrolton Avenue between Esplanade Avenue, and City Park Avenue will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Associated Press reporters Kevin McGill and Rebecca Santana in New Orleans contributed to this report.

Lee commanded Confederate armies against the United States in the Civil War and is a revered figure among supporters of the old South.

Julen Lopetegui, Spanish national coach, has made public the list of players who will be present in the next games of Spain. Manchester United's Juan Mata, who has recently returned to action following groin surgery, again misses out.

(CNN) - The city of New Orleans is set to remove its fourth and final Confederate-era monument.

A crane arrived to remove Lee early Friday morning, about 15 hours after police detoured the streetcar around the circle.

Three other Confederacy-related statues were removed at night. Protesters both for and against the statue gathered at the site as the work started that evening. Lee's is the last to be removed in accordance with a 2015 City Council vote. The shooter, Dylann Roof, was a proud racist who flaunted the Confederate flag, reinforcing many people's belief that Confederate symbols represent hate more than history.

Still awaiting removal is the statue of Robert E. Lee, whose likeness stands atop a column in the center of Lee Circle.

Landrieu called for removing the monuments in the emotional aftermath of the 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners at a SC church.

But for many in this majority black city, the monuments pay honor to a history of slavery and segregation, and they want them down. How does he feel about the use of the confederate flag in promoting the keeping of the monuments? It's been there since 1915.

At the top of the pedestal, an 8 foot, four inch base anchors the statue itself, which stands 16 and a half feet tall. It was unveiled in 1884.
