Rosenstein Defends Memo Condemning Comey Before Trump Fired Him

Democrats in attendance also contradicted the President's latest narrative for firing James Comey as FBI Director. Like so many things coming out of the White House lately, this seems both sinister and utterly moronic.

Comey described all of his contacts with the President and the White House in detailed memos that he wrote at the time and gave to his aides.

Some have voiced hope that the appointment of a special counsel might even be a positive thing for the White House, because it could bring a resolution to a controversy that has hampered the president and stalled his agenda virtually since the day he took office. "I completely disagree. He again usurped the authority of the Department of Justice. and guaranteed that some people would accuse the Federal Bureau of Investigation of interfering in the election". "He was insane, a real nut job", Mr. Trump said, according to the readout of the document provided to the Times.

They included media reports that Trump discussed sensitive intelligence on the ISIS militant group with Russia's foreign minister. But in the context of the FBI investigation, the separation between Trump and those working on his behalf is shrinking as the probe pushes nearer to his inner circle.

He offered to furnish a "record" of the Trump-diplomats meeting in the Oval Office if the White House desired it.

The developments were a blow to White House efforts to tamp down interest in the Russian Federation investigation as Trump and his staff boarded Air Force One for Saudi Arabia, first stop on his first foreign trip as president. "He thought he had gotten through and not been noticed or singled out and that he was going to get away without an individual interaction", Benjamin Wittes, a friend of Comey's, told The New York Times.

He said he learned that Trump meant to remove Comey on May 8, and agreed with the decision, and wrote a memo summarizing his "longstanding concerns".

He also reportedly divulged sensitive classified information about the fight against ISIS from an ally, later revealed to be Israel, that the US had not shared with other close partners.

Paul Ryan isn't done defending Trump
House Republicans said they didn't spend much time, if any, discussing the events at the White House. He said the House will pursue its investigation "regardless of which party is in the White House".

Trump fired Comey last week after a recommendation from the Justice Department, which cited Comey's handling of an investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state.

Mr Comey's ouster followed requests from the President that he stop an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign for misrepresenting a conversation he had with Russian officials to Vice President Mike Pence.

Earlier this week, Rosenstein named former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel on the investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The White House also has acknowledged that Kushner met with [Sergey] Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the USA, in late November.

Asked point-blank if he'd done anything that might merit prosecution or even impeachment, he said no and then added concerning the allegations and questions that have mounted as he nears the four-month mark of his presidency: "I think it's totally ridiculous". He said an announcement could come "soon" and that former Sen.

But what are we missing in all this breaking news?

The summary was drawn from a formal account of last week's meeting, which was attended by Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak - a man at the centre of numerous controversial contacts between the Trump campaign and senior Russian officials. Trump later said he had already chose to dismiss him and was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing".

Trump on Thursday lashed out at the appointment of a special counsel to investigate allegations that his campaign collaborated with Russian Federation to sway the 2016 election, tweeting that it was "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"
