Rosenstein learned of Comey firing 1 day earlier

The Wednesday decision to name former FBI Director Robert Mueller, an apolitical outsider, to oversee the case seemed meant to restore public faith in an independent Justice Department following a series of headache-inducing headlines.

The special counsel is also authorized to prosecute any crimes unearthed by the investigation. "Mueller can request additional resources, make his own calls about where to point the investigation, and in general can operate in some sense more autonomously than an ordinary United States attorney because of the designation 'special counsel.'" Mueller's next step will be to create a budget for the investigation's resources together to be approved by Rosenstein in 60 days. "In fact, I saw it came across on the internet that Trump has said this is the biggest witch hunt in history".

The ill-timed firing of FBI Director James Comey, and reports - again from anonymous sources - that Comey has written a memo stating that Trump asked him to back off the Russian Federation probe, was the final straw. He did not provide examples or evidence of any alleged "illegal acts".

The White House pointed to Rosenstein's memo last week as justification for Trump's abrupt decision to dismiss Comey.

Despite initially opposing the appointment of an independent counsel, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that the development "helps assure people and the Justice Department that they're going to go do their jobs independently and thoroughly, which is what we've called for all along".

Even so, Trump insisted that the memo factored into his decision. "I look forward to reviewing the findings of Mueller and the findings by the various House and Senate committees investigating these issues".

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver told reporters he might be the only Democrat who feels better after the briefing and felt "higher level of comfort" after hearing that Rosenstein is giving Mueller wide latitude "including latitude to investigate him" on how he handled Comey's firing.

However, she's not a fan of Joe Lieberman as a choice for FBI Director. Given his background having served under Republican President George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama, Mueller is probably the one individual who could generate the kind of bipartisan trust in Washington that this process demands.

Asked if Mueller's appointment would preempt his own request for Comey information, the Iowa Republican replied, "I don't know". Trump later said he had already chose to dismiss him and was thinking of "this Russian Federation thing". "I have made no such determination", Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein said in a statement.

The president repeated his belief that the controversy over the interference and possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign was baseless.

First reactions from Congress were mainly positive. However the White House said there would be no announcement Friday. "Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted".

Justice official says he stands by critical memo on Comey
But Trump himself has already said that he was going to fire Comey regardless of any recommendation by the Justice Department. However, Trump later lashed out at the appointment of the special counsel in a series of tweets.

Mueller won't be swayed by politics. Cummings has vigorously urged such an appointment, suggesting it could lead to accusations of obstruction of justice. Republicans on Capitol Hill hoped the same, reasoning that the appointment of a special counsel could free them to work on a major tax overhaul and other matters without constant distractions.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions in March recused himself from the Trump-Russia probe following reports that he had twice met with Kislyak while a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. During a commencement address Wednesday at the Coast Guard Academy, he complained bitterly about criticism he's faced. "And the more righteous your fight, the more opposition that you will face". He offered to furnish a "record" of the Trump-diplomats meeting in the Oval Office if the White House desired it. Trump attached both documents to his letter informing Comey of his removal.

He says he asked career Justice Department lawyers to review the memo.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is conducting one of the main congressional probes of the issue.

Trump has said he plans to nominate a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director soon, and that had been expected before his departure. Unknown to the Obama administration, Flynn had been paid more than $500,000 to advocate for Turkey's interests.

The President's adoption of the role of a victim has been a potent political weapon before and he has frequently used it to position himself against the Washington establishment, including the media which he uses as a foil in the absence of an easily identifiable political enemy, like Hillary Clinton. Turkey has long opposed US forces working with Kurdish forces. He also can not interfere with the workings of the Trump nominated FBI Director who will come as a substitute to administer the federal bureau.
