Warren native and media titan Roger Ailes dies at 77

Roger Ailes, former chief executive of Fox News Channel, has died at age 77, Fox New said on Thursday.

Ailes' wife, Elizabeth Ailes, confirmed her husband's death in a statement to Drudge Report.

Ailes' wife said in a statement she's "profoundly sad and heartbroken at her husband's passing".

Ailes left Fox News a year ago after a series of sexual harassment allegations were levied against him.

In a series of tweets, Fox News host Sean Hannity praised Ailes for founding the network and wrote that the former CEO had a significant impact on his life.

"Ailes had a clear vision for a alternative news channel in 1996, and by rigorously managing its conservative content, he build the most powerful and profitable news brand in the world".

Former President George H.W. Bush paid tribute to Roger Ailes in a tweet Thursday that credited the Fox News founder for helping him win the White House in 1988.

In the 2016 presidential race, Ailes parlayed his friendship with Donald Trump into a role as informal adviser for the presidential hopeful, even sitting in on debate prep for the candidate in his face-offs with Hillary Clinton. Ailes, who denied any wrongdoing, reportedly received $40 million on his departure.

Back to connecting the dots between Nixon and Trump; Ailes worked as a media consultant for Richard Nixon during his presidency, and some people say that his influence may be part of the issues that led to Nixon's ultimate demise.

Royal drama splits critics who describe it as 'unmissable' and 'puerile fantasy'
Let's suck it up. "We discovered that if you did too much of that, you didn't give the audience room for their picture of the person", he said.

Ailes revolutionized cable news - and arguably the entire American political landscape - when he founded Fox News in October 1986.

But Ailes' reign would not make it to Election Day.

Roger Ailes may be dead, but the country is now left suffering through his legacy: a politics of resentment fueled by a stream of racist, sexist propaganda made palatable with a populist spin.

"On a personal note, were it not for Roger Ailes, I would not be the person I am today".

Bill Shine, co-president of Fox News who had been at the channel since its inception, also left earlier this month.

"Roger and I shared a big idea which he executed in a way no one else could have", he added. "Roger was a great patriot who never ceased fighting for his beliefs".

He reminisced about how Ailes took a risk by hiring him in 1996, saying, "He took a huge risk on an inexperienced, young, local radio talk show host in Atlanta".

Ailes' widow, Elizabeth Ailes, announced his death in a statement posted on the Fox News website today.
