The student leader's death brought to at least 37 the number killed in Venezuela's political turmoil.

A video of protesters toppling a statue of late President Hugo Chavez in Venezuela emerged as thousands of women took to the streets to protest the country's socialist government Saturday.

Soldiers sprayed hundreds of protesters with tear gas at the Central University of Venezuela, with medics in gas masks attending to students with bloodied faces and limbs.

Luis Emilio Rondon, one of five members of the electoral council and the only one who in the past has sided with opposition initiatives, said Maduro's decree alone was not enough to convoke a constitutional assembly.

The Venezuelan opposition said on Sunday it would not participate in the National Constituent Assembly convened by President Nicolas Maduro to rewrite the constitution.

One teenage demonstrator died, as police responded with rubber bullets and water cannon, and a police officer was shot dead in Carabobo state.

The latest fatality, that of a 22-year-old man, occurred during looting in impoverished Venezuelan cities that have been hardest hit by a worsening economic crisis. "We are particularly concerned that the government is failing to provide basic food and medical needs to the Venezuelan people", Haley said.

Maduro said opposition ranks include armed hoodlums, and activists accuse government-backed security officials of using excessive force, including firing tear gas canisters directly at people and allowing "colectivos", gangs of pro-government armed civilians, to terrorize demonstrators. Wearing the white shirts of the opponents of country's increasingly embattled government, the women sang the national anthem and chanted, "Who are we?"

The opposition is boycotting Maduro's constituent assembly process, saying it is a ploy to keep him in power.

An influential group of US senators filed sweeping legislation on Wednesday to address the crisis in Venezuela, including sanctioning individuals responsible for undermining democracy or involved in corruption. A 17 year-old was also killed during the day's protests.

Venezuelans and fellow classical music performers have blasted Dudamel in the past for being cozy with Maduro.

"In all of Trump's conversations with leaders in Latin America, the topic of Venezuela comes up - and it's raised by him", Borges said, adding that "this top-of-mind concern Trump has about Venezuela is very valuable for us".
