Zika mosquito may transmit dengue, chikungunya with one bite

"Zika is of great interest to Queenslanders, not only because a number of people returning from overseas have contracted the virus, but also because a mosquito species prevalent in North Queensland, Aedes aegypti, is one that is largely responsible for the Zika outbreak". The findings shed new light on what's known as a coinfection, which scientists said is not yet fully understood and may be fairly common in areas experiencing outbreaks.

"We're taking a different approach, and want to use these new insights to see if the virus can be unleashed against one of the hardest-to-treat cancers", Harry Bulstrode, a lead researcher at Cambridge University, said, in a statement to Reuters.

The results showed that mosquitoes in the lab can transmit all three viruses simultaneously, although this is likely to be extremely rare in nature. "We didn't see much evidence of either one of these things in mosquitoes that were infected in the lab by multiple viruses".

"Zika virus infection in babies and children is a major global health concern, and the focus has been to discover more about the virus to find new possible treatments", said Bulstrode.

The first report of chikungunya and dengue virus co- infection occurred in 1967, researchers said.

In 2015 there was the latest Zika virus outbreak, where the regions that were the most affected were in South America.

But in July of that year a gossip website published sexually explicit online chats he had with a woman the previous summer. The former rising star in the Democratic Party saw his career as a USA congressman come to a halt in June 2011.

There had been two reported West Nile cases and three cases of St. Louis Encephalitis, a similar mosquito-borne illness, in 2016.

This early stage research will explore how the virus targets stem cells and provide the starting point to develop new treatments that seek out the tumour and spare the surrounding healthy brain tissue. Also, another team reported that Aedes albopictus, another species that can transmit Zika and other diseases, has become established and are spreading in CT, which had been considered the northern part of it range. In addition to birth defects, Zika has been associated with neurological disorders including brain and spinal cord infections.

On the other hand, "there might be some indications, but it is still fairly unknown what the effect is from co-infection", she stated.

It's also likely that there is significant underdiagnosis of coinfections. "It could definitely lead to misinterpretation of disease severity". Pregnant mothers were deemed most at risk, as the virus can cause neurodevelopment problems with unborn babies, and resulted in scores of children being born with microcephaly across South America.

It is a very rare cause of illness in USA travelers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"A large urban outbreak of yellow fever virus in a tropical megacity is a terrifying prospect", said Ebel.
