Curfew, restrictions in Kashmir to prevent violence

Militants attack Army patrol in Tral

A Hizbul Mujahideen militant seen by many as Burhan Wani's successor was killed in an encounter today, triggering clashes and leaving Kashmir staring at a fresh bout of unrest.

Violence erupted at more than 50 places in the valley after the news of Bhat's killing spread like wildfire.

Militant commander Sabzar Ahmed Bhat and one of his comrades were killed after troops cordoned off the southern Tral area overnight following a tip that militants were hiding there, police said.

A spontaneous shutdown was observed in all districts and major towns of the Valley and protests started in Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama, Badgam, Ganderbal, Srinagar and Kupwara.

"The security personnel returned fire and in the ensuing gunfight, which continued till Saturday morning, two Hizbul militants were killed", a police official said. "A man was injured in the crossfire and he was rushed to Tral Hospital, where he succumbed to the wounds", the police said in a statement.

Police said hundreds of villagers tried to break the cordon by throwing rocks at security forces.

The curfew has been announced in parts of Srinagar falling under the jurisdiction of eight police stations including Kralkhud, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safa kadal, Maharaj Gunj, Maisuma, Batamaloo and Nowhatta.

Army troops also eliminated four infiltrators in the Naugam sector.

Lone said educational institutions in the city will remain closed on Monday.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the adviser urged the worldwide community, particularly the UN, OIC, P-5 members and human rights organisations, to call upon India to immediately stop the ruthless killing of defenceless Kashmiris in IHK. This is the third time this year that authorities have suspended internet services.

They also suspended most internet services in the region a day after they had lifted a month-long ban on 22 social networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter.

The development comes after Indian Army on Tuesday damaged several Pakistani military posts with heavy artillery firing in a "very recent" punitive assault along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir as part of its pre-emptive and pro-active strategy to curb cross-border militant incursion.

The Tral gunfight ensued after a patrol of the army's counter-insurgency unit Rashtriya Rifles was sacked upon near Tral town late on Friday evening.

The written examination was conducted after due registration, physical tests and medical tests.

The Indian Army today said 10 heavily armed militants had been killed over the past 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir. A small sliver of Kashmir is also held by China.

However, transport facility has been arranged for the candidates taking the Common Entrance Test (CET) and MBBS course 2017 (AIIMS), which will also be held on Sunday.
