G-7 leaders give US more time on climate deal

U.S. President Donald Trump (C) and other leaders arrive for the group photo for the G7 Outreach Program on the second and last day of the G7 Taormina summit on the island of Sicily on May 27, 2017 in Taormina, Italy.

President Trump should join these leaders in protecting Americans from the mounting impacts of climate change and reaping the economic benefits of the clean energy revolution, rather than trying to shore up the flagging fortunes of the polluting coal and oil industries.

"I think Trump will ultimately agree to remain part of the Paris Agreement, but he will want to present it as a victory and so he will probably demand other countries make some concessions on rules or funding or emissions reduction goals of something like that", John Kirton, director of the G-7 Research Group at the University of Toronto, told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, Trump took to Twitter to announce that he would "make a final decision on the Paris Accord next week", but it was clear the US president had been a substantial roadblock over the course of the summit.

Under pressure from other G7 states - the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan - Mr Trump put his name to commitments to avoid trade protectionism and preserve a rules-based trade system.

The unexpected announcement came as a summit of G7 leaders in Sicily wrapped up in deadlock on the issue, with United States partners voicing frustration at the president's failure to commit to the deal aimed at stemming global warming.

On leaving Sicily, Trump said he would make his decision next week.

She told reporters: 'The entire discussion about climate was very hard, if not to say very dissatisfying.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came out of the G7 summit Saturday calling it a success, even though the United States did not commit to the Paris climate accord.

At Nato headquarters, he complained that many Nato member states were not spending enough on defence, expecting the U.S. to bear the burden. "We're not going to comment on Jared", he said.

Trump woos Macron, may disappoint on Paris Agreement
TRUMP to Macron at a lunch meeting in Brussels , according to the French official: "You were my guy" in the French campaign. Needless to say, Trump and Macron are going to be seeing a lot more of each other over the next several years.

The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement outlining some priorities Canada hopes to highlight at the 2018 summit - including familiar language on strengthening the middle class, advancing gender equality, as well as diversity and inclusion, and the fight against climate change.

Trump's surprise announcement, in the form of a tweet on the final day of his lengthy worldwide trip, comes after Trump declined to commit to staying in a sweeping climate deal, refusing to give into intense global pressure.

But Gary Cohn, Trump's economic advisor, on Friday said the president had told his G7 colleagues that he regarded the environment as important.

The Trump administration has argued that the US standards are tougher than those set by China, India and others, and therefore have put American businesses at a disadvantage.

Italy is eager for wealthy nations to do much more to help develop Africa's economy and make it more appealing for youngsters to stay in their home countries.

Macron praised Trump's "capacity to listen" and said "I found someone who is open and willing to deal well with us". The failure of the G7 Summit in Sicily can only cause more suffering, increase deaths at sea, perpetuate appalling reception conditions for migrants and refugees and justify inhumane deals that outsource migration management to unsafe countries.

Cohn spoke of the most "amazing deals that have really been made by an administration ever" that Trump had clinched in Riyadh, including both private-sector investments and arms sales.

"He digested that", Cohn said.

US President Donald Trump ended his nine-day overseas journey on Saturday, addressing US troops at a campaign-style rally before leaving for the US. Cohn stressed Friday that the president was simply being critical of the USA trade imbalance with Germany.
