Theresa May hits back at 'blowhard' criticism from Jeremy Paxman

Tony Hockley

It wasn't a debate, but the British electorate got to see the Prime Minister and the Labour leader questioned on their policies ahead of the General Election on June 8.

"What one's bound to say is that if I was sitting in Brussels and I was looking at you as the person I had to negotiate with, I'd think, "She's a blowhard who collapses at the first sign of gunfire", he said.

Ms May was uncomfortable when she was challenged on her history of U-turns, on everything from calling an early election to a manifesto commitment on social care for older people.

Mr Corbyn said it was impossible to say how much the United Kingdom should pay as it leaves the European Union, but promised to fulfil the country's legal obligations.

During her session from the studio audience, Mrs May was accused by a police officer of presiding over "devastating" cuts, asked by a midwife to justify her "chronic underfunding" of the NHS and heckled over school funding.

So, in effect, voters will decide whether May or Corbyn gets to sit down with Brussels and hammer out an exit deal that will define the country's trade and diplomatic ties with the EU.

He said he would start the Brexit negotiations seriously and would not countenance the idea of leaving the European Union without a deal.

Around 11,130 tweets were sent per minute as she told the presenter: "What I'll be doing is being a difficult woman and ensuring that we're negotiating hard".

"We won't start the negotiations with megaphone diplomacy, threatening Europe with some kind of offshore tax haven on the shores of Europe", he said in a dig at May's efforts to handle Brexit.

Honoring those who died
The veteran's service organization's aging membership has the group working hard to recruit younger veterans. Crusaders for Veterans and the Memorial Committee of the Biloxi National Cemetery hosted the ceremony.

The Prime Minister came under fire for cuts to public services and her plans for social care, while Mr Corbyn faced questioning on his attitude to security issues and past comments about the IRA and the Falklands War.

"I would want know the circumstances", Mr Corbyn said.

He escaped mostly unscathed, most notably when Mr Paxman asked him why his longstanding wish to abolish the monarchy was not in the Labour manifesto.

"It's not in there because we are not going to do it", he replied, adding that he had "a very nice chat with the Queen".

"It's not on anybody's agenda".

Mrs May said that when she arrived at Number 10 she felt the most important thing was to maintain "stability" in order to get on with the Brexit negotiations but that she had found that other parties such as the SNP and the Liberal Democrats wanted to "frustrate" the process.

"Everything depends on getting Brexit right".

"If we don't make a success of the next five years, our economic prosperity will suffer, jobs and livelihoods will be put at risk, and with them the security and peace of mind of working families", she will say.

"And on that central question, I believe there is only one choice. And he doesn't have the strength to do so either".
