Amid US doubt, UN chief says climate deal essential, 'get on board'

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto 2nd left and wife Jenni Haukio left welcome King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to the Presidential palace during the visit of the Nordic heads of state in Helsinki on Thursday

Business leaders say the Paris deal, also called COP21, will help generate new jobs, limit damage from climate change and help assert American leadership on the global stage.

"We believe that it will be important for the U.S. not to leave the Paris agreement", said Guterres."But even if the U.S. government decides to leave the Paris agreement, it's very important for the U.S. society as a whole - the cities, the states, the companies, the businesses - to remain engaged with the Paris agreement", he added. Lindsay Graham told CNN on Sunday that a withdraw "means that the leader of the Republican Party is in a different spot than the rest of the world".

Axios reports that Trump has told multiple people, including EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, that he wants to remove the USA from the agreement.

President Donald Trump is leaning toward pulling the United States out of the global deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions, two administration sources told NBC News on Wednesday - part of the landmark 2015 accord that almost every nation in the world has signed on to.

"I will make my final decision on the Paris Accord next week", Trump tweeted.

It's more than just energy firms, though: Microsoft, Apple, Starbucks, Gap, Nike, Google, Adidas and L'Oreal all support continued USA involvement. The Paris deal is the world's first comprehensive climate agreement, set out in 2015, with the aim of keeping the global average rise in temperatures below 2C.

Italy had hoped to make Africa the major focus of the annual G7 gathering, holding the discussions on the island of Sicily that has taken in hundreds of thousands of migrants over the past four years as they flee war and poverty back home.

Trump promised during his presidential campaign to pull the USA out of the deal. Earlier this week he called Germany "very bad" on trade because of its USA surplus.

Asylum seeker found dead near Canada-US border
The most recent Royal Canadian Mounted Police figures show that 859 people were stopped between official border points in April. The man, who did not want to give his name, said asylum-seekers aren't a rare sight in the semi-deserted border community.

Canada's emissions amount to about 1.6 per cent of global greenhouse gases.

Still, Trump expressed an open mind toward the Paris agreement after entering the White House. Every nation signed on minus two: war-torn Syria and Nicaragua, who insists the deal isn't tough enough. He made good on his promise in his budget proposal released earlier this year, seeking to eliminate a program created by the Obama administration called the Global Climate Change Initiative.

The president's tweet came after meetings with other world leaders who pushed for the remain in the Paris agreement.

That kind of rhetoric was somewhat echoed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel after the G-7 meeting ended.

McKenna told the Canadian Press the rest of the world doesn't intend to sit and wait for Trump.

The "stay-in" camp, which included Trump's daughter Ivanka, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn, and Energy Secretary Rick Perry, had argued the United States could reduce its voluntary emission-cuts targets while still keeping a voice within the accord.

In those conversations, McKenna said she's also highlighted that 90 per cent of the accord remains to be negotiated and it's better to be at the table.
