'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Sails To The Top Of The Box Office

'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Sails To The Top Of The Box Office

While the Johnny Depp-led swashbuckling adventure continued the series' fourteen-year streak of opening at #1, it scored the lowest domestic opening weekend since the original classic Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted with $46.6 million back in 2003.

Most of the overseas openings for Baywatch are set for June.

In the swashbuckling film, the ghost of Captain Salazar, played by Oscar victor Javier Bardem ("No Country for Old Men"), wants Jack Sparrow to pay for causing his untimely death. The movie carries a $60 million production budget. With the United Kingdom box office in turmoil due to to the horrific terrorist attack (probably down about 20%), the top territories looks to be France and likely South Korea. I have to think that Paramount's release strategy was to combine Baywatch's Thursday for the win over Pirates' previews, as they hoped to change the narrative heading into the weekend.

Dead Men Tell No Tales sailed into first place at the box office over the weekend but the story the numbers dictate is not one of swashbuckling heroics.

The release of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean flick brings both good and bad news for Disney.

Indian-origin Ananya Vinay wins Scripps National Spelling Bee 2017
When she was told that she would have to give a speech during the closing ceremonies Friday, she said it wouldn't be a problem. Ananya was crowned the victor of the 90th instance of the erudite tournament after she spelled 35 words correctly.

Dead Men is already up to $208.4 million in foreign ticket sales after a near-simultaneous global opening that includes key markets like the United Kingdom and China.

Just for context: Prometheus finished its domestic theatrical run in 2012 with $126.5 million in ticket sales, plus an additional $276.9 million from foreign audiences - and it never even opened in China. The R-rated feature based on the TV show which stars Dwayne "The Rock' Johnson and Zac Efron, is now in 3,647 theaters".

Elsewhere in the top 10, Fate of the Furious became the sixth movie to cross the $1 billion mark internationally, while the Emma Watson-starring live-action version of Beauty and the Beast has now earned more than $500 million in the domestic market. Analysts at BoxOfficePro.com were predicting $83 million over four days. The bad news? Pirates and every other movie combined put up the worst Memorial Day box office performance in almost 20 years. Alien: Covenant dropped a few spots from first to fourth this week adding another $10.5 million to its two-week total of $57.3 million. In case you'd forgotten, Guy Richie's King Arthur has the privilege of being the first casualty of summer 2017.

In fifth was "Everything, Everything", a romantic drama from Warner Bros., at US$7.7 million.
