Trump Leads Nation's Remembrance on Memorial Day

Trump first placed a wreath in Arlington at the Tomb of the Unknowns a day ahead of his inauguration.

He told the stories of two soldiers who died in Afghanistan, Green Beret Capt. Andrew D. Byers of Colorado Springs and Christopher D. Horton of the Oklahoma National Guard, as Byers' parents and Horton's widow looked on. He specifically recognized Kelly's son Robert, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. John Kelly's other son, Johnny, is preparing for his fifth military deployment.

Mr. Trump concluded by thanking the "unknown soldiers". He then rested his hand on his heart as a bugler played taps.

President Donald Trump expressed the nation's "boundless" gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice paid by Americans defending the United States, dedicating his first Memorial Day address as commander in chief to a top Cabinet secretary and two other families who lost loved ones. "We only hope that every day we can prove worthy, not only of their sacrifice, but of the sacrifice made by the families and loved ones they left behind".

"And while we can not know the extent of your pain, what we do know is that our gratitude to them and to you is boundless and undying", Trump said to the Gold Star families.

In one of the annual rites of every presidency, Trump traveled the short distance over the Potomac River to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia to honor the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who were killed in service to their country.

On Tuesday, Christian Jacobs, the 6-year-old son of a fallen U.S. Marine, adorably shared his experience exchanging a high five with President Trump at Arlington National Cemetery.

"The Kelly family represents military families who carry the burden of freedom on their shoulders", said President Trump.

President Trump, in his first public remarks since returning from a nine-day overseas trip, paid tribute to fallen USA troops in a traditional Memorial Day ceremony Monday, saying they "died in war so we could live in peace".

But at the Memorial Day ceremony on May 29, Trump said Gold Star families honor the nation with their sacrifice. At the time, he did so alongside Vice President Mike Pence. Bob Dole during the speech and turned to the wars of today by remembering Army Spc. Christopher Horton, was killed in Afghanistan in 2011.
