Sanders Slams Trump For Insulting Germany

As the war of words threatened to spin out of control, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other senior German politicians stressed the importance of Germany's Atlantic ties, with Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel suggesting the spat was just a rough patch.

"I think the relationship that the president has had with Merkel, he would describe as fairly unbelievable", Spicer said when asked about the relationship between the us and Germany. It's the "calling of our times to stand up to this man with everything that we represent", Social Democrat Martin Schulz, Mrs Merkel's main election challenger, said in a campaign speech late Monday. "This is what I have experienced in the last few days".

And this despite a Tweet from Trump on Tuesday morning, in which he called out Germany for having a large trade deficit with the US and not paying their fair share on defense spending.

Spicer said that Trump feels he and Merkel have a "fairly unbelievable" relationship.

'They get along very well. "He has respect for her".

This caused something of an global media storm, with questions around what it would look like for Europe to go it alone and what Merkel's statement would mean for U.S.

"All I can say is that we Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands", she declared.

Microsoft, Amazon oppose Trump's dumping of climate agreement
The the world's top producer of oil, thanks to its rich shale reserves and its extraction technology. Pulling out of Paris does not mean disengagement, he said.

At the time, USA security experts defended the surveillance, saying friendships can easily end - an argument that was swiftly dismissed in Berlin, where strong trans-Atlantic ties had always been the foundation of its worldwide diplomacy. The German leader repeatedly characterized Obama as a friend and a strong German ally, and Obama called Merkel "one of my favorite partners throughout my presidency" during a visit to Germany's Brandenburg Gate on Thursday.

Prior to Trump's trip to Europe, he had met with all of the G7 leaders except Macron, who only took his oath of office two weeks earlier. Previous presidents have said as much for decades.

Spicer also disputed the medias interpretation of Merkels remarks that she felt that Europe could no longer depend on the United States. In a summit last week, U.S. President Donald Trump created alarm among allies by reprimanding them for not contributing enough for their defense and declining to specifically endorse NATO's mutual defense clause.

Days earlier, in Saudi Arabia, Trump had presided over the signing of the single largest U.S. arms deal in American history, worth $110 billion over the next decade and including ships, tanks and anti-missile systems.

Another significant area where the Merkel may have found herself doubting Trump's commitment to common worldwide goals is the Paris Climate accord.

But one thing Ms. Merkel said last weekend would find a strong assent from a USA president who thinks Europe has been free-loading on the United States for far too long.

Alongside Mr Modi, Mrs Merkel said that while trans-Atlantic relations are of "paramount significance", the European Union had to forge its own path in the world "considering the current situation". Her comments may have been interpreted differently in the USA, causing an uproar, but that's not her fault, said the official. The German chancellor, the most powerful politician in Europe, grew up in Eastern Germany, and her upbringing there has always been credited for her staunch support for closer European-American ties. "Anyone who today puts on national blinkers and no longer has eyes for the world around him is, I'm convinced, ultimately out on a limb".
