The Latest Cosby arrives at court before sex assault trial

Comedian Bill Cosby goes on trial for sexual assault on Monday in Pennsylvania, the culmination of years of allegations that have torpedoed his show business career.

He said he did not expect to testify, although his lawyers refuse to rule out that possibility.

FILE - In this Tuesday, May 16, 2006 file photo, entertainer Bill Cosby raises his arm to the audience on the campus of University of the District of Columbia in Washington. As he sought to return to office in 2015, amid a chorus of new Cosby accusers, Castor defended the decision by saying Constand had offered more "detail" in her lawsuit than she did in her police statement.

They are also expected to refer to Mr Cosby's own admission in 2005 that he had used drugs as part of his efforts to have sex with women.

Cosby's lawyers have signaled they will grill Constand on why she waited almost a year before reporting the alleged assault and why she remained in touch with Cosby for months after their encounter, even taking her mother to see one of his performances.

Constand told investigators that Cosby invited her to his home, and while the two talked, Cosby encouraged her to drink wine and supplied her with pills, which Constand alleges Cosby told her were herbal.

As district attorney, Steele will prosecute the case, with assistants Stewart Ryan and Kristen Feden.

The issue died down until 2014, when comedian Hannibal Buress called Cosby out as a rapist, leading dozens of new accusers to come forward. Others simply enjoyed the brush with fame. "Somebody really famous thought I was pretty and cool, and I went with that".

Cosby, 79, has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing in response to the accusations covering a series of alleged sexual assaults dating back to the 1960s, most of which are too old to be the subject of criminal prosecution.

She was a single mother working at the Trident Restaurant, a celebrity hangout and one-time jazz club, in Sausalito, California, when she met Cosby.

"I can't say anything, but there are certain things that I look at, and I apply to the situation, and there are so many tentacles", he said.

In remarkably similar allegations the women say that the pioneering comedian gave them sedatives and alcohol, which left them powerless to resist his advances.

Cosby's lawyers have spent the past 18 months trying to have the criminal case thrown out.

Bill Cosby goes on trial Monday in suburban Philadelphia in a sexual assault case that will largely rest on the testimony of one woman: Andrea Constand.

A woman who worked for one of Cosby's agents at the William Morris Agency in Los Angeles is the only other accuser permitted to testify to suggest Cosby had a pattern of drugging and molesting women. "Even though this is for Andrea, it's kind of collectively for all of us", Janice Baker-Kinney, a former Reno bartender who alleged Cosby gave her a pill and sexually assaulted her in 1982, was quoted in the report. Cosby's family feel the charges are spawn from racism, although some of his accusers including the former William Morris employee are African American.

Experts in sexual assault say victims often behave in inconsistent ways for a variety of reasons.
