Apple HomePod to Compete with Amazon Echo, Google Home

But while supposedly superior sound is all well and good, at $349 HomePod will cost around twice what you'd pay for an Amazon Echo ($179), and about three times the price of Google Home ($109 at a slight discount). At almost double the price of both the Amazon Echo ($180) and Google Home ($149), the HomePod isn't positioning itself to compete with those devices.

Compared to the audio quality of Apple's new HomePod, the Amazon Echo is a significant mismatch.

The new MacOS High Sierra will also be rolled out later this year, offering a smart photos feature to make it easier to find what you're looking for. But thanks to a smarter Siri integrated into this speaker, you can send messages, get updates on news, sports and weather, or control smart home devices by simply asking Siri to turn on the lights, close the shades or activate a scene. On a practical note, all of them work nearly the same way. It's a premium device - both with regard to build quality and performance, as well as price at $350.

How Smart is the Music Streaming? Unlike devices like the Echo and Google Home, audio part isn't secondary functionality.

Yet how well Apple differentiates its new product with others already widely available is questionable. For Apple, HomePod is seen as gateway to keep users on the Apple ecosystem. HomePod will act as a HomeKit base, allowing users to control their homes from anywhere in the world, something now offered on select Apple TV and iPad models.

Analysts are yet to be convinced that HomePod will rock the smart speaker market the way iPhones came to rule the smartphone world and iPods dominated MP3 players. So if you go for an Apple HomePod, you will need to first have HomeKit enabled accessories.

What remains unknown about HomePod is just how well Siri works within the speaker - it is still yet to be shown off within HomePod. Google sells Home for US$180, promoting the smart speakers with discounts. Google, meanwhile, previewed new speaker features such as hands-free phone calling during its software conference last month.

Amazon introduced the Echo speaker, featuring its Alexa assistant, in 2015. From notifications for delayed flights to pre-set reminders to upcoming appointments to traffic updates and what not, both Echo and Home stand out to offer you something you will need on a daily basis.

While future versions of the HomePod may indeed place it more firmly in competition with other smart speakers, it's simply not the case now.

HomePod combines with seven tweeters, six microphones and a woofer to provide you unparalleled sound quality and experience.

Apple HomePod quite expensive than the other two - and that too by a fair margin. In the past, Apple has begun accepting pre-orders on its website for new devices like the iPhone 7 one week before they arrive in stores.

Given it's price and features ( or lack of it), it seems very hard for HomePod to challenge Google Home or Amazon Echo.
